Salt Lake City’s average rent was $1,278 in April

Salt Lake City’s average rent reached $1,278 in April, after a 2.7% increase since last year. A major Utah job hub with a 48% renter share, Salt Lake City is a desirable place to live and work in, with apartment prices below the national average of $1,417.

The average rent for an apartment in Salt Lake City rose slower than in other surrounding cities, such as West Jordan ($1,258), where prices went up by 5.7%. Meanwhile, apartment rates in West Valley City increased by 7.5%, reaching a $1,221 average.

What it costs to rent in the largest renter hubs in the Salt Lake City area

Provo ties with Midvale as the largest renter hubs in the Salt Lake City area, with a 57% share of tenants. Provo has a $1,461 average rent (up by 5% since last year), while Midvale apartments go for $1,168 on average, after a 2.8% increase.

Salt Lake City comes in third, followed by Clearfield (42% renters), where rental prices circle around $1,135, after a 7.6% yearly increase. Last but not least, Ogden's 39% share of renters places it fifth among the area’s renter hubs. The city’s average rent reached $994 in April, going up by 3.8% in the past year. 

The priciest and cheapest cities for renters in the Salt Lake City area

Provo is the priciest city for renters in the Salt Lake City area, with apartments renting for $1,461 per month. South Jordan’s $1,400 rate is the second most expensive, while apartments in Herriman ($1,395) come in third.

For renters in search of budget-friendly apartments, Ogden's $994 average rent is the cheapest in the Salt Lake City area, followed by Taylorsville's $1,054 rate. Clearfield rentals are the third least pricey on the list, with a $1,135 average rent as of April.

Among Salt Lake City's most popular renter ZIP codes, 84116 has a $1,088 average rent, below the city average ($1,278). At the same time, rentals in ZIP 84107 go for $1,115, while prices in ZIP 84123 circle around $1,068. Apartment rents in ZIP 84111 clock in at around $1,462, higher than the Salt Lake City average, while rates in ZIP 84103 average at $1,714.
