Houston’s average rent reached $1,102 in December after a 1.2% decrease since last year. One of Texas’s largest job hubs and a renter household-majority city (57%), Houston is a desirable place to live and work in, with apartment prices below the national average of $1,462.

The average rent for an apartment in Houston decreased compared to Pearland ($1,356), where prices went up by 1.5% since last year, and The Woodlands where they went up by 2.9% ($1,498).

What it costs to rent in the largest renter hubs in the Houston area

The city with the largest renter share is Houston (57%), followed by Galveston, with 57% renter households. In Galveston, apartment rents increased by 0.3% since last year, reaching $1,098. Pasadena, with an average rent of $914, has the third largest share of renters (47%) and has experienced a rent increase of 3.2% since December 2019. In Conroe, where 45% of homes are renter households, the average rent is $1,122, going down by 0.9% in the past year. Apartments in Baytown, where 44% of homes are rented, cost $963 per month, an increase of 3.4% in one year.
