Renter's guide to Woodbury, MN

Woodbury is a city in Washington County, Minnesota, and a suburb in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area. It ranks as the best place to live in Washington County, and the 12th best suburb to live in Minnesota. In a list compiled by 24/7 Wall Street, Woodbury was also named the best city to live in Minnesota, due to a highly educated population, low unemployment level, and a high standard of living. With low crime rates, well performing schools, and a relaxed, suburban vibe, it’s particularly popular with families.

With a population of 67,648, Woodbury is the 4th largest suburb in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area. It’s far more populous than most of its neighbors, but also enjoys a larger area of 35.72 sq. miles. Of its immediate neighbors, only Cottage Grove is larger in terms of area, though has a population of just 37,208, so while Woodbury isn’t particularly densely populated, there are less crowded cities nearby. Compared to St. Paul, Woodbury is around 4 and a half times less populous, and certainly leans more suburban than urban.

Woodbury is located around 8 miles east of downtown St. Paul, and around 20 miles east of downtown Minneapolis. Two Interstates serve the city, the 94 which forms the northern border, and the 494 which cuts through the northwest corner of the city. Together, they facilitate travel in any direction, and journeys into nearby Wisconsin are particularly quick.

Summers in Woodbury are typically hot and humid, with average highs of 83°F in July. Winters are colder, with regular snowfall. January is generally the coldest months with lows of 6°F, and you can expect around 48 inches of snow per year. Tips for renting in Woodbury, MN

In spite of recent growth, much of Woodbury remains residential, with most commercial spaces located in the north/northwest of the city. If walkability is important to you, it’s worth seeking out apartments in neighborhoods in these areas. Fortunately, most of the apartment complexes in the city are in neighborhoods that are within walking distance to commercial areas and public transit hubs.

However, if you choose a neighborhood to the south/southeast, it’s almost essential to own a private vehicle to get around. Numerous paved trails do exist, and cycle lanes on roads are not uncommon, though winter can stop cyclists in their tracks.

If you do plan to drive, be aware that winters can be harsh. Even though the city is generally quick to plow the streets, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with winter driving conditions by taking an advanced course.

Things for renting

Living in Woodbury, MN

Woodbury is widely considered to be a safe and developing neighborhood which has seen a lot of growth over the past few years. Crime rates are low, while schools are considered to be high quality. Previously considered more of a bedroom community, recent growth has seen a slew of new facilities, shopping areas, restaurants, and entertainment venues appear, making Woodbury more of a self-sufficient city than it was just a few years ago.

It blends suburbia with nature, with clean and tidy neighborhoods and a vast network of public nature trails, parks, and lakes. Modern road networks also ensure that traffic seldom builds up, and commute times are not too long.

Despite growth, some argue that the city still doesn’t offer enough in terms of entertainment for younger people, who generally head to Minneapolis for fun. It’s a more family-oriented city, and while the location is great for young professionals, it’s perhaps not the ideal place to meet like-minded individuals.
