We moved in about a year ago amd our rent was raised 3 times since then, we're paying close to $500.00 a month now and for what? I only see 1 person working there when I'm there and he doesnt do much, they're not even open 24/7 and if you're more then a day late with rent they cut off your lock and put on theirs and refuse to let you in till you're paid in full. The place is a scam, go somewhere else. ... Read more

I’ve been to Public Storage on River St in Santa Cruz 4xs in the past 2 weeks. There has not been a cart to move out anytime. I had to move out today, my last day in the unit without a cart. I showed up at 2:15pm. The office was closed. No one was at the property managing it. I received an email notice a few days ago, after I already gave notice of termination, my rent, for a small unit, would be going up by 50% March 1st. Get rid of your stuff people, not worth paying for storage. Very frustrating. I absolutely do not recommend using this facility. ... Read more

Ripped me off $29, tweaker hobo snuck in door behind me. Don't trust these guys. They rented me a storage locker, but it was not the size I had been shown, and the facility was not secure (tweaked out hobo snuck in behind me). I requested a refund, but the guy insisted on retaining a portion just for an "admin fee." Call it what you want, I call it ripping customers off. Not a legit move, definitely do not recommend dealing with these guys. Made a call to the manager, Ryan Gable, but have not heard back about my refund. These guys are a scam, stay away. ... Read more

Dianna was really helpful when I went to pick up my fridge and microwave. She guided me how to use the elevator since one of them wasn’t working and showed me around how to find my locker when I needed help. She is very patient and kind and really enjoyed her service ... Read more

Dianna was very helpful in Cancelling my reservation. All I needed to do was tell her my name, my locker number, and that I wanted to cancel my reservation. It was that easy. Seeing as the entrance and exit process is fully automated, I find it strange that you are only allowed in during certain hours of the day but overall it was a good experience. ... Read more

Frequently Asked Questions

Storage units available at Public Storage - 1001 River Street include the following amenities: Climate-Controlled, Indoor, Drive-Up Access, Retail Available, Onsite Manager, Security Camera, Credit Cards Accepted, Elevators, First Floor Access, Multi-Level Storage and Online Payment. Depending on what you need to put away in storage, you can discover there are some things you absolutely need, so make sure you check with the facility manager that you'll find everything you need on site.

This particular storage facility provides self storage units of different sizes, ranging from 12 to 300 square feet. Space is not an issue! If you have more belongings to store, or simply bulkier items or even vehicles, you should go for larger storage units.

You already know how much stuff you need to put in self storage, so figuring out the unit size you need is the next step. Smaller units such as 5'x5' or 5'x10' spaces can usually be filled with the amount of items you would normally store in a closet: a few chairs and lamps, sports equipment, garden tools and some boxes.

Moving on to larger sizes, imagine the 10'x10' and 10'x15' units as similar to a bedroom or a living room – larger pieces of furniture, sturdier equipment and bicycles can fit here. Finally, a 10'x20' unit has enough space for the contents of a 3-bedroom house, while the larger 10'x30' space easily accommodates the contents of a loaded semi-truck.

Monthly prices for units offered by Public Storage - 1001 River Street start from $32 and can go up to $351 for larger spaces.

Accessibility and quickness are key when it comes to storage, so drive-up storage units are generally regarded as very convenient. Pull your car right up to your storage space, load, unload, and you're good to go! However, if you're mostly storing temperature-sensitive items, you should rather consider indoor storage units.

Climate-controlled units maintain consistent temperatures and humidity levels all year round, making them perfect for all your sensitive items. Moisture and varying temperatures can damage a whole host of things, and that is why a lot of people choose to use climate-controlled units to store items like wooden furniture, electronics, artwork, documents and photographs, collectibles, antiques, etc. If the belongings you're storing are important to you, you should consider renting a climate-controlled unit.
