Houston’s average rent reached $1,127 in April, after a 1% increase since last year. A thriving economic and cultural center and a renter-majority city (54%), Houston is a popular location to call home, with apartment prices below the national average of $1,417.

The average rent for an apartment in Houston rose slower than in other surrounding cities, such as Pearland ($1,352), where prices went up by 1.6%. Meanwhile, apartment rates in The Woodlands decreased by 3.4%, reaching a $1,470 average.

What it costs to rent in the largest renter hubs in the Houston area

Webster, the city with the largest renter share (88%) in the Houston area, has a $1,046 average rent, after a 2.5% annual increase. The second largest renter hub, Galveston, has a 55% renter share, with its apartments going for $1,108 on average (up by 0.4% since last year).

Houston comes in third, tied with Humble (54% renters), where rental prices circle around $1,127, after a 3.8% yearly increase. Last but not least, Rosenberg's 50% share of renters places it fifth among the area’s renter hubs. The city’s average rent reached $1,165 in April, going up by 9.6% in the past year. 

The priciest and cheapest cities for renters in the Houston area

The Woodlands is the priciest city for renters in the Houston area, with apartments renting for $1,470 per month. Pearland’s $1,352 rate is the second most expensive, while apartments in Katy ($1,332) come in third.

For renters in search of budget-friendly apartments, Clutes $830 average rent is the cheapest in the Houston area, followed by Pasadena's $910 rate. Baytown rentals are the third least pricey on the list, with a $951 average rent as of April.
