It probably won’t come as a surprise but we’re currently home to America’s best hipster neighborhood, according to Forbes (huh?!) magazine. Care to guess which one of the hippest L.A. nabes landed on the top spot? Yeah, you’re right, Silver Lake leads the nation in terms of urban culture, laid back lifestyle and progressive thinking.
Considering more than 250 neighborhoods in the biggest U.S. cities, the magazine based its analysis on several commonly accepted “hipsterdom” indicators such as walkability index, the number of locally owned bars and restaurants, food trucks and farmers markets as well as the residents’ inclination towards artistic endeavors.
It’s exactly the abundance of each and every one of these features complemented by the most avant garde Modernist architecture in North America that recommend Silver Lake as a prime destination for people showing off hipsterish traits. Bordered by other trendy hoods like Los Feliz and Echo Park, the artsy enclave features the best mix of hipness and gentility. Dive bars, graffiti murals, cheese shops, alternative and indie rock pubs, they all have their fans, followers and admirers. The Red Lion Tavern has been feeding Angelenos’ appetite for fun night-outs for over 50 years now, and continues to attract interesting crowds with its traditional German food, awesome German beer, and the cozy Old World atmosphere.
If you’re looking for a spot to unwind and lounge around with your friends for a couple of hours, the 4100 Bar at 1087 Manzanita St is the place to be. It’s exactly the kind of bar that makes you feel right at home with its cozy ambiance, dim mood lighting, comfy couches, reasonable prices and great music. It gets pretty crowded on weekends so don’t expect peace and silence!
Silver Lake also boasts some of the prettiest and most diverse rental apartments in town, all enhanced by a positive feel and truly magnificent scenery. Delightful homes overlooking the scenic Silver Lake reservoir, people walking their dogs, lovely staircases and sloped streets, green trails, tattoo parlors, record stores and small local businesses, they are all charismatic backdrop pieces that help build the area’s overall charm.
Congrats, Silver Lake. Now get ready for the mass exodus.
