Houston, we have great news! Although property managers may not be turning cartwheels of joy, renters have every reason to rejoice over the fact that while the national average rent is breaking records, rent growth is decelerating in Space City. In May the national monthly average reached a staggering $1,204 according to Yardi Matrix, in contrast with Houston’s mere $1,039 in the same period.

It gets better! We went in quest of something even more accessible, and found a wider range of affordable apartments in Houston than we expected.  There are literally dozens of communities that offer apartments for a fraction of that sum, so the only challenge left for us was to cherry-pick the most appealing ones.

Located just a corner down North Vista Drive off Interstate 45, La Esencia is roughly equidistant from Downtown Houston and The Woodlands, easily accessible from Beltway 8 as well as FM 1960. The serene gated community offers a great amenity package complete with outdoor BBQ grills, a fitness center, playground and not one, but two sparkling saltwater swimming pools with sundeck.

Pine Terrace is located on Omeara Drive in the southwest area of Houston, near the Houston Medical Center and Reliant Stadium, easily accessible from Interstate 610 that surrounds the whole city. The area has it all from shopping, recreational, industrial and educational facilities, and the apartments themselves feature newly-renovated interiors with hardwood floors. Did I mention it’s also a steal?

One step closer to Downtown than this and the prices go through the roof. Go in the opposite direction and… Wait, why would you? Isn’t this deal enough of a bargain? Vista Verde Apartments is in what one might call the Goldilocks zone of Houston: just the right balance of proximity and price. And no, it’s not even dated—you get air conditioning, dishwasher, a swimming pool and a lot more. In other words, a truly carefree lifestyle.

Willow ParkChasewood — rents starting at $583 — Check availability

This gated community in the Missouri City neighborhood of Chasewood offers such a great amenity package, that for this price it’s more than a bargain. It’s legalized theft. Double stainless steel sinks, detached garages—Willow Park pretty much has it all… Oh, and look at that sparkling pool!

Jordan CoveDickinson City — rents starting at $680 — Check availability

Jordan Cove - low-cost apartments in Houston

Fully affordable, Jordan Cove’s spacious two- and three-bedroom homes feature some truly amazing interior design as well as tons of space both inside and outside, as the units come with what they call ‘private outdoor storage.’ Much like at Willow Park, here too the pool is absolutely magnificent.
