Self storage can be a big help when you are overwhelmed by too much stuff in your home. In fact, a 10’x10′ storage unit could be the perfect solution for storing everything from seasonal holiday decorations to camping equipment — but you will need to keep your unit organized to fully benefit from the additional storage space.
If you have decided that renting a self storage unit will make your life a little easier, begin to plan and organize before you even start packing. A few tips from storage professionals will help you make the most of your storage space. A 10’x10′ unit is the most popular size, but these tips can apply to other unit sizes too, whether you’re needing space temporarily or for the long haul.
Make a Plan Before You Start Packing
To start, check with more than one local self storage facility to compare monthly rental prices on a 10’x10′ unit, as they can vary widely. For example, in Arizona, a storage unit in Phoenix starts at $89 while a storage unit in Tucson starts at $95. In Colorado, a storage unit in Fort Collins starts at $60 and a Colorado Springs storage unit could cost as little as $32, while over the border in New Mexico, rates would cost at least $60 for an Albuquerque storage unit.
Storage facility staff can also help you determine the size of space you will need. Once you have determined that a 10’x10′ unit will accommodate your needs, start making a list of the items you are sending to storage. It could be as simple as a handwritten list or a more elaborate numbered or color-coded list created on a spreadsheet.
Have all the appropriate packing supplies at hand. Boxes of the same size will make for easier stacking. Buy bubble wrap for fragile items. Have soft blankets available or purchase padded covers for furniture that could potentially get bumped or scratched. Consider purchasing a shelving unit for storing small items.
Get Ready for Your Move
Take time to properly protect larger items, and pack boxes securely so contents won’t rattle around during transport. Label boxes with enough detail so that you will know what’s inside — you will thank yourself when you go to retrieve stuff later.
Map out the storage space with a simple drawing. A general rule is to store larger and heavier items on the floor. Make use of vertical space by stacking — most 10’x10 storage units come with eight-foot ceilings. Here are a few helpful rules to keep in mind:
- Do not place sofas on their side as this can cause structural damage
- Mattresses should be cleaned, covered and laid flat
- Rugs should be rolled and stored flat, as folding or storing them upright could cause permanent damage
- Clothing should be rolled up to maximize space
- Disassemble furniture when possible, and keep loose hardware in a plastic bag taped securely to the furniture or inside a drawer for easy reassembly later
Plan to use a vehicle large enough to haul your load to your rented 10’x10′ unit. A moving van will ensure your items are protected from elements such as wind and rain during transport.
Organizing Your Storage Space on Moving Day
On moving day, you might need a few extra helping hands to load and unload your vehicle. Have your map handy as you load the truck, sending items that will be placed at the front of your storage unit to the back of the van. Items that will be stacked, such as lighter boxes, should also be loaded toward the back so that they come off the truck last.

Use your map as a guide as you fill your storage space. Place heavier boxes on the floor, followed by lighter ones on top, making sure labels can be seen. Things you will need more frequently should be stored toward the front. Leave room for a walking path so you can access items later.
Before you shut your storage unit door, tape a copy of your inventory sheet inside. As you lock up, you can feel good that you took time to organize your 10’x10′ space so that your goods are well protected and can be easily accessed later.
