$1,500 rent budget: How much space can you get across 200 U.S. cities?

If you’re planning a move this season, a $1,500 rent budget could go a lot further than you think. Nationally, that amount gets you around 703 square feet on average, but in some cities it unlocks nearly double that space.

McAllen, TX, tops the list with a whopping 1,378 square feet, enough for a three-to-four-bedroom apartment. Macon, GA, and Columbus, GA, aren’t far behind, both offering spacious four-to-five-bedroom options for the same price. See which cities give you the most space for your money.

“In half of the 200 cities we analyzed, a $1,500 monthly budget covers a one- to two-bedroom apartment, while in 26 markets — mostly in California — it won’t even get you a studio. If space is your priority, but you still want big-city amenities, look to Wichita, KS; Toledo, OH; or Oklahoma City, where that budget lands you over 1,200 square feet.

And keep an eye on Metairie, LA — it’s the only city where $1,500 unlocks a bigger apartment than last year, putting a compact three-bedroom within reach.”
