If you’re thinking about signing up for a rent payment reporting service, you may wonder what happens if you ever pay your rent late or miss a month. Many programs, including RentCafe’s rent payment reporting powered by IdentityIQ®, report only on-time payments to the credit bureaus, so a late payment won’t show up as “late” on your credit report.
Generally, a rent payment that’s a few days late is unlikely to be reported as late, but policies can vary. Separately, a landlord can still charge late fees or send unpaid rent to collections, whether you report your rent or not.
- Many rent payment reporting programs, including RentCafe’s service powered by IdentityIQ®, report only on-time payments, so a late payment won’t show up on your credit report.
- Late fees and collections can still apply if rent is late or goes unpaid, whether or not you report your rent.
- Paying on time helps you avoid penalties, and it may also help you build your credit over time if you use a rent payment reporting service.
Late vs. missed rent payments: What’s the difference?
A late payment is rent you pay after the due date and any grace period. A missed payment is rent you haven’t paid for a month.
Programs may treat them differently, and the longer rent stays unpaid, the more likely your landlord is to send the unpaid rent to collections.
When a late rent payment gets reported
While many rent payment reporting providers report only on-time payments to the credit bureaus, some may still report both on-time and late payments. Check the provider’s reporting policy before you sign up.
With an on-time-only program, a late payment isn’t reported. What happens when rent goes unpaid for a longer time, for example for several months, depends on the program, so ask the provider for additional details.
Programs that report late payments in addition to on-time ones typically don’t report them right away. A common benchmark is 30 days past due, but it depends on the landlord or service, so confirm the details of that policy.
What rent payment reporting doesn’t change
Rent payment reporting affects only what’s sent to the credit bureaus. Late fees can come from your lease, not from the reporting service.

If rent goes unpaid for a significant amount of time, or you move out owing money, the landlord can send the debt to collections, meaning a company either collects the debt for the landlord or buys it outright. Collections can lower your credit score and stay on your report for up to seven years.
What to do if your rent payment is late
- Review your lease agreement to find out the rules that apply if a payment is late. You can also talk to your landlord about your situation, ideally before the due date. This guide to handling a rent payment delay walks through the steps.
- To avoid late payments, set up autopay, ask whether your due date can match your payday or add a reminder a few days before rent is due.
- You can also visit AnnualCreditReport.com to see which rent payments appear on your credit report.
How RentCafe’s rent payment reporting handles late payments
Rent payment reporting through RentCafe is a free, optional service* powered by IdentityIQ®. It’s available to renters at RentCafe partner properties who have joined the RentCafe Rewards loyalty program. You can easily sign up for both the loyalty program and rent payment reporting through your RentCafe account.
IdentityIQ® reports only on-time, full payments to the three major credit bureaus in the U.S.: Equifax®, Experian® and TransUnion®.
IdentityIQ® reports your on-time rent payments once a month, on the 24th. If you sign up on or after the 24th, your payments will start appearing the next month.
Here’s how IdentityIQ® handles common reporting situations, from paying rent late to moving out.
| Situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| Rent paid late | A late payment won’t show up as “late” on your credit report. Your landlord may still charge a late fee under your lease. |
| One missed rent payment | There’s no negative impact on your credit report. |
| Three missed rent payments in a row | The rent account is removed from your credit report. |
| Moving out | Reporting stops and your rent history stays on your credit report as a closed account. |
An optional paid membership upgrade is available at any time after signing up for rent payment reporting. The upgrade will add up to 24 months of past rent history, RentCafe Rewards points and other credit protection tools, including identity theft protection and fraud alerts.

A late rent payment doesn’t have to be a credit setback. With an on-time-only program like the one available* through RentCafe and IdentityIQ®, late payments aren’t reported and a single missed month leaves no negative mark from rent payment reporting.
Even so, paying on time is the best way to avoid penalties. Plus, through a rent payment reporting service, your on-time payments may also help strengthen your credit over time.
*Available at select RentCafe partner properties.
