Interested In Using Self Storage In Las Vegas? Here Are Some Things You Should Know

Although many traditionally associate Las Vegas with fun weekends and the tourism industry, the city and its surrounding metro area are now experiencing a population surge. Factors such as affordability, outdoor recreation opportunities and diversity attract more families here. The local economy is also diversifying, with innovative companies calling Las Vegas home and providing well-paying jobs.

The influx of new residents, and new businesses, are increasing the local demand for self storage. A climate-controlled, 10’x10’ self storage unit in Las Vegas rents for about $123 per month – and you can store plenty of items in it, from furniture and home appliances to hobby gear.

Before renting self storage in Las Vegas, here are some of the things you need to know and how to make sure you make the most out of your storage unit:

Decide what’s worth putting in storage

Using self storage is a great way of protecting your belongings while also enjoying a clutter-free home. However, for self storage to be truly helpful, it’s important that you only store items you actually need and will use again. For example, don’t store clothing you haven’t worn in a long while. There’s probably a reason why you stopped wearing said clothes. Putting them in storage is a waste of time and money. However, it’s a good idea to store items you use only occasionally, such as special occasion outfits or sportswear for camping trips.

The same goes for any category of belongings. If you replace your fridge with a new one, don’t put the old fridge in storage. Most likely, you won’t use it again. On the other hand, you use items like power tools or a pressure washer occasionally, but not every day – so it’s totally worth it to have them in a self storage unit located close to your home.

Find the right unit size for your needs

The size of the storage unit you should rent is another important consideration. If you plan to store a few boxes of extra stuff, some light sporting equipment and a couple of chairs or other small furniture, then a 5’x5’ storage unit is the right size for you. If you have more stuff (various furniture items, home appliances) consider renting a 10’x10’ unit. It’s comparable in size with half of a standard garage, which means you have enough space for one room’s worth of furniture plus multiple boxes.

For those moving locally, you may need to store most of your belongings for a while. This requires a larger unit size. A 10’x20’ storage unit has enough space to temporarily hold most of the furniture, appliances and other belongings from an average three-bedroom home.

Before renting a unit, take inventory of the items you plan to store to help you identify the right unit size for your needs. It’s important that you get one large enough to comfortably store all your belongings while also allowing you to easily reach every item you store.

Use climate-controlled units in Las Vegas

Climate-controlled units ensure an environmental temperature between 65 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit, regardless of the outside weather. Seeing as the weather is extremely hot in Las Vegas during a good portion of the year, you should use a climate-controlled storage unit. Most of the facilities in the area offer this amenity in all, or at least some, units, so it won’t be difficult for you to book such a unit. For storing delicate and expensive items, a climate-controlled unit is not a mere recommendation but a must. Here are the categories of items that need this type of unit:

  • Electronics
  • Antique furniture
  • Books, papers and documents
  • Collectibles
  • Artwork
  • Items made of leather

You can protect your RVs (and other vehicles) in self storage

One of the greatest perks of living in Las Vegas is having access to the amazing natural beauty of Nevada. From desert to snow-capped mountains and deep canyons, there are many options for spending time in nature. It’s no wonder that RVing is pretty popular in Las Vegas. However, it’s hard to find a place to store your RV while not in use. Parking on the street or your property is usually not an option for most of us – so the simplest, most reliable solution is self storage.

Many self storage facilities offer storage spaces large enough for an RV. It could be an open parking space, a covered parking space or even a closed unit, depending on your preferences. You can, of course, put other types of vehicles in storage also.

Businesses can also benefit from using self storage

Self storage doesn’t help only individual customers solve their storage-related needs – businesses can also benefit from using this service. Las Vegas has a local economy oriented toward tourists and convention organization, and many businesses in these fields have complex storage needs. A convention center or a hotel, for example, can use self storage for extra chairs, tables, electronic equipment, kitchen utensils, bedding and so on while they’re not in use.

Self storage is more affordable and versatile than renting a commercial warehouse. Companies can rent, on a month-to-month basis, as much or as little space as they need. It’s also more convenient for companies to use self storage instead of occupying precious space at their place of business.
