How Self Storage Can Help You Manage Post-Halloween Cleanup

As the spooky season comes to an end, we’re left with plenty of nice memories but also with cluttered homes filled with decorations, costumes and leftover party supplies. This means that it’s time to pack up the cobwebs and put away the skeletons. However, it’s really important to pack and put everything away properly so that you get to enjoy it all for years to come, whether it’s bulky lawn inflatables, fragile decorations or elaborate costumes.

Here’s how to manage your post-Halloween packing and cleanup and why, and how, self storage can help make the process stress-free and smooth.

Sort your decorations

The temptation to quickly shove everything into boxes after Halloween is real, but taking the time to properly sort through your decorations will save you a lot of hassle later on. Start by grouping your items by category: lights, inflatable yard displays, animatronics, fragile or breakable decorations, small items and any other types of decorations you might have. Organizing not only makes things easier to find next year, but it also helps keep your decorations in good condition.

Be sure to only store nonperishable items — real pumpkins, leaves, corn husks or any other organic materials should be tossed out before packing. Leaving these in with your decorations for a whole year could lead to mold, rot or worse.

For animatronics and lights, remove the batteries and place them in small bags that you can store in the same box with the corresponding item. This prevents battery corrosion and ensures everything is ready to go when Halloween rolls around again. Protect fragile items by adding packing peanuts, bubble wrap or crumpled paper to their boxes to cushion them from damage.

For inflatable decorations, it’s smart to store them in sturdy plastic containers to prevent accidental punctures and to keep them dust-free. Labeling the containers can also help you quickly identify what’s inside next year, making your Halloween prep even easier.

Clean and pack your costumes

Keeping your Halloween costumes from one year to the next not only saves money but also valuable time, especially if you have children. Rather than scrambling to find or make new costumes each year, you’ll already have a collection of options at hand. Kids love to mix and match pieces, so last year’s costumes can easily turn into new, creative combinations without the added expense. The same idea applies to adults — you don’t have to wear the same costume every year, but having pieces to repurpose allows for endless possibilities. Plus, this practice encourages sustainability by reducing waste and consumption, which is a bonus for the planet.

However, to keep your costumes in good shape for future use, proper care and storage are essential. Start by cleaning all washable parts of the costumes — but always check the labels first to ensure they’re machine washable. If not, hand wash delicate items or take them to the dry cleaners, depending on the manufacturer’s recommendations.

After cleaning and ensuring they are completely dry, neatly fold each piece to avoid wrinkles or creases. If you have delicate fabrics, such as satin or lace, you might want to place tissue paper between the folds to protect them from snags or damage. Store these fabric pieces in breathable garment bags or plastic bins with lids to protect them from dust and moisture. Avoid using airtight containers as fabric needs some airflow to stay in good condition. Adding cedar blocks or lavender sachets to the storage containers can also help keep fabric fresh and prevent any unwanted pests, such as moths, from damaging your costumes over time.

For nonfabric parts, like plastic or accessories, wipe them down with a damp cloth to remove any dirt or residue. For delicate materials like papier-mâché, cleaning options may be limited, but careful storage can make all the difference.

Wrap fragile costume parts, like masks or accessories made from papier-mâché, in bubble wrap, and pack them securely in sturdy, lidded boxes. It’s a good idea to add desiccant bags to the boxes, especially for moisture-sensitive materials like papier-mâché, to prevent mold, mildew or warping over time.

Rent a self storage unit

Storing all those packed boxes at home can definitely be a challenge. Attics or basements often aren’t ideal options — attics can become too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter, while basements are prone to humidity, which can damage your stored items over time. And let’s face it, using up valuable storage space inside your home is not a practical solution. It only adds to clutter, creating additional headaches when you’re trying to keep your home organized.

A far better solution is renting a self storage unit for all your Halloween decorations, costumes and other seasonal items. This allows you to free up space in your home while keeping your belongings safe in a controlled environment. Self storage units, especially climate-controlled units, are designed to protect items from extreme temperatures and humidity, ensuring your costumes, props and decorations stay in great condition year after year. Plus, you can also store other holiday decorations and any items you don’t use on a daily basis, making your home feel more spacious and organized throughout the year.

Take your boxes to the storage unit

Once everything is properly packed and you have rented a self storage unit, it’s time to take your Halloween items to the facility. There are some precautions to take at this stage as well to ensure that your costumes, decorations and other holiday-related items will stay in tip-top shape for an entire year:

  • Don’t place your boxes directly on the floor. Instead, use a pallet or a durable tarp to prevent moisture from getting to your stuff.
  • It’s a good idea to install sturdy metal shelves along the walls of the unit. You can store more boxes in a safe manner as you don’t have to stack them one on top of the other.
  • As some of the costumes might keep their shape better if you hang them, you could add a clothing rack to your unit.
  • Leave a couple of inches between the walls of the storage unit and your belongings to allow for proper ventilation and to prevent any issues associated with moisture from condensation.

Set the stage for what’s to come

Halloween is the start of the fall and winter holiday season, which means that you need to prepare your home for what’s to come. Now that your Halloween-related belongings are safely tucked in a storage unit, it’s time to set the stage for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

You could start by doing a deep clean and an organizing spree of the entire house — since you are renting a self storage unit, you can declutter your entire home and backyard by storing all the items that you use only occasionally, including sports gear, various tools, garden furniture and so on.

Whether you choose to start decorating for Christmas before or after Thanksgiving is up to you. There are two opposing camps on the issue: those who prefer autumnal décor until after Thanksgiving, and those who want to make the most of their Christmas decorations. Regardless of which stance you take, it’s a good idea to take out your Thanksgiving and Christmas decorations, dust them up, inspect everything and decide whether you should get any new items this year. This way, you’ll be on top of holiday-related chores and will definitely enjoy the jolly season a lot more!
