These 7 Furniture and Décor Pieces Will Help You Save Space in a Small Apartment

One would think that in order to have a fully decorated home, they’d need a spacious abode. Yet, that’s not the case! Even if you’re renting a small space, you can have a beautifully decorated apartment, with items that create the illusion of a more functional space and provide additional storage.
Here are 7 space-saving furniture and décor pieces that’ll add extra space to your small home.
Make Use of Wall Space by Going Vertical
When you’re short on floor space, going up is the most obvious choice. You can add a lot of storage space by hanging shelves throughout your space. If you’re renting and don’t want to put holes in the walls, you could purchase vertical shelves or book shelves.
Vertical shelving can be used to store a plethora of things, not just knick-knacks, books and the like. You can use them in the kitchen as a makeshift pantry. You can use them in the bedroom or bathroom to act as a closet. You can even use them as a makeshift bar if you like to entertain a lot.
Storage Benches, Chairs or Ottomans
Along with vertical shelving, storage benches, chairs and ottomans are a great way to add storage without sacrificing function. You can store extra blankets or pillows in ottomans with larger storage space, but they can also double as a coffee table (if you use a serving tray to act as its top) or even additional seating!
You can place storage benches near the door to serve as a place to store your shoes, backpacks and other essentials you may need when leaving the apartment. You can add cushions to the top so you can put on and remove your shoes, which is really helpful if you don’t want to track dirt, mud, or snow throughout the apartment.
Mirrors and Acrylic/Glass Pieces
One of the issues people have with small spaces is that it can look cramped and dark. You can give the illusion of having a larger space by placing mirrors throughout the apartment (we like placing them near windows to amplify the natural light) or even use them as table top décor, like putting them under lamps or under centerpieces in the dining room or on the coffee table.
Acrylic furniture like chairs and tables or tables with glass tops can also give the illusion of having more space. The clear material is durable and functional, but it doesn’t block the line of sight, thus making the room appear larger, or at the very least less cluttered.
Drop Leaf or Nesting Tables
If you’re downsizing your family’s home but still like to entertain and need dining space for that, drop leaf tables and nesting tables are good options. They are also very easy to move from one space to another. Drop leaf tables, namely dining tables, can be expanded when you need additional space and then drop the leaf when you’re done.
Nesting tables typically come in sets of three like the Russian nesting dolls. These tables fit under one another when the other two tables aren’t needed and are easy to move whenever and wherever they’re needed.
Folding Wall Tables and Murphy Beds
A fantastic way of adding space to any room without sacrificing function is by installing a folding wall table or a murphy bed. These pieces of furniture can serve many purposes and save a boatload of space! Folding tables, for example, can feature shelves that are accessible when the table is down. This makes a perfect item to act as a desk (put office supplies on the shelves), a bar (bar essential on the shelves) or even a dining table (utensils, plates and glasses).
A murphy bed, of course, can save space in a bedroom or studio. Like the wall tables, you can find murphy beds that can serve other purposes because they’ll have shelves or tables built in.
Multipurpose Coffee Tables
Multipurpose coffee tables are great space savers because they can have shelving or storage built in, or their top can be raised to make the table higher (if you need it to act as a desk). These tables come in a variety of sizes and styles, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to find the perfect one to fit your décor and function the way you need it to.
Corner Desks and Tables
Corner desks can give you the workspace you need without taking up too much of the room. They often feature shelves, cabinets and drawers, so you aren’t going to miss the functionality of your typical desk, just enjoy it in a small-space-friendly alternative.
There are a million and one ways you can maximize your small space while still keeping true to your personal style. These are just a few of the options that are available to renters. With a little creativity, you might be surprised with what you come up with!
