Live in a small place but still love to entertain? Yeah me too, and I’ve come up with one of the coolest ideas to remedy this situation, if I do say so myself! I call it my mobile bar but you can call it whatever you’d like; “genius”, “such a good idea”, whatever!
I love having friends and family over to visit my place. It may be tiny but it’s always fun to have those close to you see your place and give me the opportunity to show off my great design ideas. Sure I live in an apartment but I’ve never let that stop me from making it my own.
Being in my mid-twenties I’d begun to find my stash of alcohol bottles atop of my fridge, a multi-purpose can opener as a bottle opener and a ragtag grouping of bar and shot glasses that mysteriously made it into my cabinet, as slightly immature. After stopping by an old roommates new place (who I know for a fact contributed one or two of those bar glasses in my cabinet) and being offered a glass of wine from her formal bar in her new home, it hit me; it’s time to update.
When I returned back to my place I took a look around and realized there was no way I had room for a formal bar like hers, I was going to have to improvise. I went and purchased a rolling cart along the lines of this little gem at Ikea, don’t worry you can glam it up.
On top I stocked it with a couple basic wine glasses without a stem, like these so they don’t topple as the cart rolls, and a couple lowball glasses suitable for almost any kind of drink. Then I added a utensil cup filled with all of the appropriate utensils; bottle opener, wine-key, long handled spoons, a martini shaker, strainer, and other such items.
On the middle, or the tallest rack, you must stock up this space with the booze. You know what you and your friends like so I won’t try and guess on that one.
Now here’s the pièce de résistance: your drinking games! Equipping your mobile bar with entertainment as well will keep everything in one place is the full package. I mean really, how often are you playing Apples to Apples or Scattegories without a drink in hand…as an adult?
So I guess what I am saying here is that even if you don’t have the room for a fancy formal bar like my old friend, it also doesn’t mean your kitchen needs to resemble that of a frat-boy. I simply store my little cart in the hall closet and wheel her out to play hostess. Grown up style.
