Q: What’s your favorite spot in Chicago to take photos, and why?
“That’s like choosing a favorite child! But if I had to pick, the Rookery Building and the Wrigley Building are at the top of my list. The Rookery gives you that architectural drama and gorgeous indoor light that feels straight out of Vogue. And the Wrigley Building at golden hour? Unreal. The way the sun bounces off the buildings to create the perfect light, with the river and skyline in the background, it’s effortlessly iconic.”

Q: What makes Chicago such a photogenic city in your eyes?
“Chicago is effortlessly cool! It’s got that bold city edge mixed with elegant historic charm. You can find steel, glass, brick, and nature all within blocks of each other. From the clean, high-end vibes of the Gold Coast to the gritty romance of the West Loop, every area tells a different story, and that variety makes magic behind the lens. Plus, that golden light? She always understands the assignment.”
Q: Any lesser-known gems?
“Absolutely! Ping Tom Memorial Park in Chinatown is a peaceful little escape with skyline views and lush greenery. Garfield Park Conservatory is like a tropical dream: perfect for romantic, intimate portraits, no matter the season. And the Fine Arts Building is a hidden architectural gem: ornate staircases, rich textures, and vintage vibes that transport you straight into old Chicago elegance. If you’re looking for magic, that’s where it lives.”

Q: What are your go-to photography spots?
“As a professional photographer in Chicago for over 10 years, I have narrowed down my favorite locations for photos. Hands down, my number one is the skyline along Lake Michigan. Two areas for this stunning view are Olive Park and North Avenue Beach. Olive Park provides a quieter vantage point with Lake Michigan in the foreground and the towering cityscape behind, perfect for golden hour photos. North Avenue Beach, on the other hand, offers a wide-open view of the skyline framed by sand and water, especially dramatic during sunrise or sunset.

“For architecture lovers, the Chicago Riverwalk is an ideal location. Whether you want the famous Chicago bridges in the background or the historic buildings like the iconic Wrigley Building, the Riverwalk is a must-see. If you’re looking to combine nature with a skyline backdrop, the Lincoln Park Nature Boardwalk is a lesser-known spot. It offers a serene escape with native plants, a tranquil pond, and a striking view of downtown framed by an artistic “honeycomb” structure.

“Chicago is packed with great places to shoot! There are stunning lakefront and skyline views along Michigan Avenue, as well as an amazing mix of parks. The contrast between the green spaces and the city’s architecture makes for some really striking photos, whether you’re into urban landscapes or nature shots. But one of the best photo spots that many people overlook is Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary, also known as the Magic Hedge. It’s just four miles north of downtown, right by the lake, and it’s a real gem, especially if you’re into wildlife photography.

It’s a hot spot for birdwatchers because it sits right on a major migration route, so hundreds of different bird species pass through every year. As a local bird photographer, I’ve been visiting this photo spot since 2001 and still photograph there regularly. I’ve captured everything from Red-tailed Hawks and Yellow Warblers to Sandpipers and owls like the Whip-poor-will, and many more.
Even though it’s well-known in the birding world, it may not be as known to other photographers. A lot of people don’t realize this peaceful little haven is so close to the city. If you’re looking for something a bit off the beaten path, the Magic Hedge is definitely worth checking out.”

Q: What’s your favorite location to shoot in Chicago?
“One of my favorite locations to photograph in Chicago is The Rookery Building. My studio has photographed hundreds of weddings, proposals, portrait sessions, and other special events at this landmark Chicago icon, and we are preferred vendors at the property. Proposal shoots at The Rookery connect our couple’s love story with the soul of Chicago. Whether it’s a winter proposal bathed in warm indoor light or a summer engagement when natural daylight pours through the atrium, it’s always stunning.”

Q: What makes Chicago photogenic to you?
“Chicago is one of the most photogenic cities in the world—it’s a stunning blend of architectural brilliance, natural beauty, and dynamic urban energy.
“You’ll find spring blooms, summer street festivals, amazing autumn colors, and snow-dusted winter scenes. The city mixes historic landmarks like The Rookery with modern marvels. Chicago’s Lincoln Park is a perfect example of an urban oasis blending floral textures, classical structures, and wildlife within city limits.
“And the neighborhoods are canvases themselves, from bold murals in Pilsen to quirky alleyways in Wicker Park. Each area, from the industrial cool of Fulton Market to the historic charm of Hyde Park, offers its own story and aesthetic.”

Q: Are there any lesser-known areas you’d recommend to someone looking for that “perfect shot”?
“Three of my favorite locations, which are a little off the beaten path, include The Alfred Calwell Lily Pool in Lincoln Park, The 16th Street Murals in Pilsen, and the Ping Tom Memorial Park in Chinatown.
The Caldwell Lily Pool is a serene, prairie-style garden tucked away near the Zoo—think winding stone paths, a waterfall, and lily-covered pools. It’s like stepping into a secluded storybook scene. The 16th Street Murals are located under the Metra tracks in Pilsen. The art is urban, gritty, colorful, unique, and ever-changing. It’s perfect for couples who want something bold, creative, and real. Finally, Ping Tom Park offers sweeping views of the skyline from the southwest, plus an eye-catching red bridge and traditional Chinese design elements. It’s peaceful, unexpected, and full of texture.”

We hope this list of Chicago must-sees has inspired you to get out there and enjoy the art of photography. Whether you’re snapping casual, on-the-fly sightseeing pics or setting up for a formal shoot, you can’t go wrong in the Windy City!
