Moving is a good pretext for de-cluttering your life

Moving ChecklistMoving to a new place can suddenly turn into a fun-filled adventure if you set some things in order beforehand. This should be the most pleasant part anyway as you’ve already completed the daunting process of searching for apartments to rent. Now you just have to bring out your managing skills and thoroughly coordinate the next steps.

Be organized and relaxed. Keep your cool and expect the unexpected, you’re going to lose a few breakables in the process anyway. Don’t fret about it! You know it’s no use crying over spilt milk. Take it from me, I’m an expert in switching places, I moved four times during college and two times afterwards. And each time was totally refreshing. Not only did I get better cribs, I also got new roommates and met interesting new people. So what if you have to pack your entire life in a few bags? Don’t panic, just look at it as a new beginning. The part with the new roommates can be both exciting and horrifying… but that’s another story. As long as you’re honest and considerate everything should work out fine.

Pack your bags and keep them light. As clutter is a natural thing and we’re all part of it, I’m pretty sure your closet is packed with old, unused items that would be better off in new hands. You need to go over your stuff anyway so why not get rid of some things that you no longer need. There are so many places out there where you can donate all sorts of household goods, clothing, books, and even small pieces of furniture. When de-cluttering, keep in mind this golden rule: whatever you haven’t worn for at least one year, must go! And don’t use excuses like “I’m going to lose a few pounds and wear it again”, deep down you know that’s not what’s gonna happen. They’ll just fill up another closet.

Use eco-friendly packing materials. The next step is to find packing materials. Have you heard about green moving? This is an excellent time to show off your concern about the environment. Instead of buying new cardboard boxes you can rent or buy used ones made of recycled materials. Or go through your magazine collection and newspapers; maybe you’ll find some old issues that can be used as wrapping paper. If you’re thinking of hiring a moving company, look for one that flaunts eco-friendly attributes.

And last but not least, let all of your friends know that you’re moving; you’ll need all the help you can get.
