Four great reasons to downsize in Phoenix

Gone are the days of massive Hummers dominating the narrow roadways of the I-17. Flashing a wallet full of credit cards in line at Starbucks is anything but brag-worthy. Owning a gas guzzling behemoth is no longer a status symbol and we’d rather not advertise the mountain of debt we’ve accumulated, it’s just not cool anymore.  Different economic times have undoubtedly changed how we handle our bank accounts and have directly changed the way Americans live our lives.  Downsizing is the new movement and frankly, we love it.

The housing market crash hit the Phoenix market particularly hard leaving everyone standing around wondering just where all that equity and perceived savings went overnight. As a direct result more and more Arizonians are opting to downsize spending, downsize their cars, as well as downsize their housing choices. The once goals of owning or renting a McMansion have dropped from the agendas of Phoenicians everywhere now considered almost ridiculous.

Here are 4 reasons why you should consider downsizing your Phoenix apartment:

  1. Utilities – A smaller place invariably equals smaller utility bills.  The cost of running the air conditioner to battle extreme desert heat eight months of the year can be astronomical.  Not only will using fewer utilities help out the planet, you’ll be saving a ton of cash here as well.
  2.  Square Footage – This one can be sourced using basic math here.  Realtors determine a fair market price for square footage for a given area in order to appropriately price properties.  Downsizing means that you’ll be paying for less square footage and therefore lowering your monthly payment yet again.
  3. Better Location – It is an essential law of real estate and it is particularly true to Phoenix; if you’re willing to give up a bit of square footage you’re able to grab up some of the best and most desirable locations around.  If nothing else you’ll likely be able to scoop up a place in the perfect location for below or at the price you’re paying now by giving up that extra space you don’t really use or need.
  4. Freedom – Isn’t it always a bit of a relief when you do that big spring clean or finally clear out the place for a garage sale?  Imagine essentially forcing yourself to clear out the excess stuff in your life to make room for the things you really need or enjoy.  No longer having the option for storing those unnecessary things in that extra space can certainly be a freedom you may not have considered.

Cutting back doesn’t mean getting less or losing out on anything.  Choosing to spend more wisely and conserving where appropriate has more perks than downfalls, especially now that it’s even considered the cool thing to do!
