Dallas neighborhood profile: Deep Ellum

Share this article:

Deep Ellum has a long history of being Dallas’ destination for alternative and creative culture. In recent years, the neighborhood has struggled with crime and violence issues, which hopefully will not become defining long-term characteristics.

Nonetheless, Deep Ellum remains a charming and eclectic place to live, with reasonable rents, a funky vibe, and plenty of good bars and restaurants. The music and restaurant scene here peaked in the 1990s, but some reopenings of favorite clubs and venues are planned. The area is sometimes compared to more artsy and laid-back Austin, Texas.

Apartment wise, there are plenty of modern lofts and condos to choose from in the area. There are also converted industrial buildings that are now loft-style apartments.

During a typical weekend in Deep Ellum you might enjoy:

Shop at local businesses: There are lots of small locally-owned stores to check out, and the neighborhood is known for its handcrafts and art products.

In season, visit an outdoor market: Products include arts and crafts and local produce.

See a show: Musical entertainment is easy to come by at one of many clubs, which feature everything from rockabilly to punk.

Grab some grub: Top area restaurants include Twisted Root Burger Co., Local, Cafe Brazil or Cowboy Chow.

Check out local street art: Colorful graffiti and unofficial murals abound.

Visit a bakery: The Zen Bakery is known for its peaceful and delicious treats.

Look for a new apartment. Find Deep Ellum listings among the choices on RentCafe’s Dallas apartments.
