The South End is a revitalized historic neighborhood found just minutes from Uptown Charlotte. Well-known for its nightlife and sense of community, the area is currently expanding and becoming a more commercial and lively place to be — just perfect if you’re looking to make a move.
This community is a great option if you are looking for a fresh start as new beautiful homes and condos are constantly being built, giving you an array of choices. South End has it all, from work and opportunities to fitness, relaxation and shopping. Plus, there is no shortage of activities to fill your weekends! Let’s find out more about one of Charlotte’s best:
Where is South End?
South End is nestled between Wilmore in the North West and Dilworth in the South East. It lies about a 7 minutes’ drive from Uptown and less than 15 minutes away from Charlotte Douglas International Airport. It is right on the Blue Line, which makes it quick and convenient to visit other parts of the city as well.
History
In the 1850s, Charlotte’s South End began with a railroad that connected Queens City to Columbia and Charleston. It was Charlotte’s first railroad line and, with its creation, grew a small manufacturing community whose focus surrounded textiles.

However, this industrial powerhouse soon began to decline in the 1970s and, eventually, this once bustling community grew quiet and known for its abandoned buildings. A catalyst for most major developments in the area was the addition of the LYNX Blue Line — the region’s first light rail service. Now, after the South End underwent a 2.2 billion dollar transition, the area has seen a boom in high-end residential construction and offers a collection of office and retail space.
Lifestyle
The neighborhood is known for its lively nightlife and the constantly evolving office and retail spaces. Craft breweries such as Wooden Robot Brewery, pubs like Tyber Creek Pub, art galleries, nightclubs, restaurants, and more, flood South End’s nightlife options. If you are someone that enjoys a vibrant nightlife after work, South End would be a phenomenal choice.

What to do
It’s not hard to find things to do here. Late mornings can be spent visiting one of South End’s fantastic galleries such as the Elder Gallery of Contemporary Arts, right after a good cup of coffee in one of its many cafés. Afterward, you can visit the Hidell Brooks Art Gallery or the New Gallery of Modern Art. Then you can choose to waste a few hours at one of the boutique shops or visit Atherton Mill and Market.
You can also visit South End’s famous Rail Trail — the only linear park in the city. It runs alongside the rail line and is spotted with many art installations and public plazas. It’s the perfect gathering place for fitness enthusiasts, runners, bikers, and it’s an excellent spot to take some Instagram photos!
South End has many community activities that you can take part in. From regular gallery crawls to the annual Art & Soul Festival, this is a neighborhood that thrives on community.

Where to eat & drink
The South End is brimming with places to eat, drink and have a good time. If you are a breakfast person, Einstein’s Bros and Bagels would be a great option with their delicious coffee and extensive list of breakfast sandwiches. You can also try Not Just Coffee if you like specialty brews. Lunch choices include places like Let’s Meat Korean BBQ, Luciano’s Ristorante Italiano and Hot Taco.
For a nice dessert, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams is the way to go. Spend your nights at Brigid’s Irish Pub and Tyber Creek Pub or, if you are interested in craft beers and ciders, you have plenty of choices on hand with Wooden Robot Brewery, Sycamore Brewing and The Unknown Brewing Co — to name a few.

Moving to South End
Real Estate Snapshot
If you’re looking for apartments for rent in South End, there is a generous amount of possibilities available when choosing your new home. At $1,702, the cost of renting in the South End is higher than the $1,259 city average but still lower than a place in Uptown. For renters, there are many apartment options throughout this new and improved neighborhood and on the outskirts — Silos, Spectrum and District Flats are all popular choices.

Transportation
Commuting isn’t a difficult feat. The South End has parking lots and on-street parking, while also being a very walkable neighborhood. At the same time, being on the Blue Line makes a trip to Uptown, NoDa, or even University a breeze.
South End is also a good spot for cycling due to the Rail Trail and the other bike lanes in the neighborhood. Those without their own bike can grab one through bike-sharing programs such as Lime Bikes or Charlotte’s own B-Cycles.
Schools & Employment
As the South End expands, new office and retail space will continue to pop up. Right now, the main employers in the neighborhood are in the food and retail sectors, but the small business sector is growing as we speak.
