Established in the late 1800s, the Dilworth neighborhood is on the National Register of Historic Places, and it is bursting at the seams with vintage charm. Edward Dilworth Latta took 250 acres just outside Charlotte’s original city limits and turned them into a tree-lined neighborhood which became one of the city’s most visited areas today! The mature oaks still flank the streets full of old bungalows, which today are sprinkled with boutiques and modern luxury-style apartment buildings.
Where is Dilworth?

Located to the southwest of Uptown outside the 277 loop, Dilworth is adjacent to South End — another historic Charlotte neighborhood. Dilworth butts up against Sedgefield on the other side with Sedgefield Park, connecting the two neighborhoods for pedestrians. The main thoroughfare through Dilworth is East Boulevard where you will find most of the restaurants and boutiques.
History
Established in 1890, Dilworth was originally known as the Eighth Ward of Charlotte. Mr. Latta branched out from the original four wards centered around Trade and Tryon banking on the expansion allowed with the electric streetcar. The new streetcar line allowed Charlotteans to move out of the main hub of the city. The Latta Charlotte Street Railway Company began operating its first electric streetcar just two days before Dilworth had its grand opening.

Lifestyle
Don’t mistake Dilworth for a sleepy little historic neighborhood! There is a lot of fun to be had in this corner of The Queen City. Dilworth offers fine dining and shopping, and it also hosts Hydrate Medical, home of the famous Hangover Drip.
While you can certainly get your fill of fresh air strolling the sidewalks or riding your bike along the oak-lined streets of the neighborhood, Dilworth also puts its residents in a perfect spot for enjoying some great parks. You can easily get to Sedgefield Park, Latta Park and Freedom Park. Freedom Park is one of Charlotte’s finest, full of hiking trails, playgrounds and sporting fields, encompassing 98-acres including a large 7-acre lake.
What to do
For those looking for a little retail therapy, there are several boutique shops covering things like clothing, jewelry, gadgets and even interior design. Arts and culture buffs will enjoy the galleries scattered about, but those seeking happy hour will be especially satisfied. Dilworth is home to pubs, bars, wine tasting rooms and it even has its own nightclub called Bassment Charlotte which offers underground dance music.

Where to eat and drink
The neighborhood has a stellar lineup of restaurants. The flavors run the gamut from ethnic flavors to specialty donuts, so it’s no wonder why the rest of the city flocks to Dilworth at mealtimes.
Those seeking bites from the far corners of the world will enjoy dining at places like Yafo and Copper. Hungry for good ol’ Americana? JJ’s Red Hots and Big Daddy’s Burger Bar are ready to please. Plus, Dilworth offers vegetarian options at Fern, an excellent brunch experience at Kid Cashew, or a tasty treat at Mr. K’s Soft Ice Cream. No matter what, Dilworth can satiate your tastebuds.

Those looking for apartments for rent in Dilworth should know that the average rate is $1,595 per month, slightly below the average Uptown rental, but still in easy access to the city.
Transportation
The neighborhood of Dilworth is set up in a grid style for easy navigating, and it is considered one of the most walkable in the city. If you need to get to other parts of Charlotte, it can be done with relative ease. The East/West station of the light rail is conveniently placed in Dilworth. Access to 77 and 277 are also within easy reach. Plus, if biking is more your style, Dilworth makes it easy.

Schools & Employment
The public schools serving the Dilworth area include the Latta Campus of Dilworth Elementary, Randolph Middle School and Myers Park High School. Parents will also find Charlotte Montessori School a lovely nearby option.
Charlotte’s largest hospital with 800+ beds is also in Dilworth. Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center is the only Level 1 trauma center in the region, and it’s also a teaching hospital.
