Analyzing One Year of 311 Complaints in San Francisco

Although San Francisco is unique in many ways, it seems that the most basic truths remain unrefuted even in the City by the Bay. Think about how autumn brings irritableness to our lives, for example, but the first summer breezes seem to blow our worries away. Or the Monday doom and gloom that we all think we know oh-so well—but it’s always the aftershocks that really get the best of us. And while all this deepgoing wisdom could have come from a fortune cookie or a cheesy (de)motivational poster on your aunt’s social media profile, believe it or not, there’s actual government data to support it all!

Our analysts took to the registry of 311 calls in the past two years to see what bugs San Franciscans enough to pick up the phone and report it. When and for what exactly are the phones ringing off the hook? Or is it even still the phone the most popular means to get those complaints through to the authorities?

One thing is certain: the people of San Francisco don’t hesitate to exercise their right to complain when needed. So much so that the number of 311 reports in San Francisco jumped by almost a quarter last year!

Here are the key facts:

  • There were 349,602 complaints registered in 2015, a 24% increase from the previous year
  • Most of the complaints were submitted via phone (43.4%), followed by the 311 mobile app (35.4%) and the website (14.6%)
  • The intersection of 18th and Mission streets attracted the most complaints of any intersection citywide, followed by Cedar and Larkin with 305 reports in 2015
  • The Inner Mission district was also the neighborhood with the most complaints, with more than 30,000 notices in 2015
  • The top 3 neighborhoods by number of complaints are: Inner Mission, SoMa, Tenderloin
  • The most complaints were submitted in October, 33,358, which accounts for 9.5% of the total. May was the least active month of the year with 24,931 notices (7.1% of the total)
  • August 11 was the day with the most complaints: 2,151
  • People sure like to complain between 9 and 10 AM; approximately 30,330 complaints were submitted during this time frame last year
