The Changing Face of Charlotte: 10 Time-Lapse Images Reveal the Queen City’s Impressive Growth

As the largest city in North Carolina, Charlotte has seen significant growth in recent years. The warm climate and thriving economy have drawn more people to the area, leading to an increased demand for high-rise apartment living as well as Class A office space.

A Changing Skyline

To show the dramatic growth in Charlotte’s downtown area, RentCafe turned to Google Street View and created a side-by-side comparison of some of the biggest changes to its skyline, occurred sometime between 2007 and today. These changes show why Charlotte is one of the country’s most exciting places to live.

1. 1 Bank of America Center, The Ritz-Carlton – Uptown

The 1 Bank of America Center business tower includes two 25-foot olive trees in its eighth-floor sky garden and lounge. The building was built to achieve LEED gold standard certification. The nearby Ritz-Carlton combines luxury guest rooms with restaurants and a penthouse bi-level spa and wellness center.

2. Duke Energy Center – Uptown

Named for its anchor tenant, Duke Energy Center at 401 S College St has offices, restaurants, and retail shops. The building is owned by Wells Fargo and is part of the Levine Center for the Arts. The building has achieved LEED Platinum certification and shops and restaurants will be coming soon.

3. Aloft Charlotte Uptown, The Ritz-Carlton, 1 Bank of America Center – Uptown

Joining The Ritz-Carlton and 1 Bank of America in this view of the skyline is Aloft Charlotte Uptown, a boutique hotel with loft-style guestrooms. The hotel includes a lounge, snack bar, bar, and pool.

4. The Vue – Uptown

Soaring 600 feet into the air, this 50-story high-rise is the tallest skyscraper between New York and Miami. Built in 2010, The Vue is a fully-residential building with studios, multi-bedroom apartments, and penthouses available. Residents have access to some of the city’s best views, as well as amenities like a junior Olympic pool and complimentary fitness classes.

5. Catalyst, Duke Energy Center, Element Uptown – Central Business District

In front of Duke Energy Center is Catalyst, a luxury apartment high-rise that has everything a resident could need, including TV viewing in the elevators. Developed by Atlanta-based Novare Group, the 27-story tower was completed in 2009. Located next to Catalyst is Element Uptown, a 22-story high-rise that includes apartments and condominiums.

6. Ally Center, Catalyst – Central Business District

In front of Catalyst is Ally Center, a 15-story LEED Gold-certified building that is home to Ally Financial, GMAC Financial Services, and architectural and engineering firm HDR. The Ally building includes restaurants, as well as access to some of the city’s best dining, shopping, and cultural options.

7. Hyatt House, 1 Bank of America Center – Uptown

In front of 1 Bank of America Center is Hyatt House, once known as Hotel Sierra. Hyatt House is connected to Time Warner Cable Arena, making it popular with those visiting Charlotte for concerts and NBA basketball games.

9. NASCAR Plaza, Duke Energy Center – Central Business District

Rising in front of the Duke Energy Center is NASCAR Plaza, a 20-story office building with 360-degree panoramic views of the city. In addition to offices that support the nearby NASCAR Hall of Fame, the plaza is home to NASCAR Digital Media and other local businesses.

10. UNCC Uptown – Uptown

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is a public research university offering a wide variety of degrees. Its Center City campus includes an art gallery, a 300-seat auditorium, and a 110-seat lecture hall. The building’s design has been compared to a stack of books.
