Could you live in a 12×12 apartment?

Super small micro apartmentA new idea for micro-sized living in San Francisco proposes little itty bitty tiny apartments that would be not much bigger than just a single room.

If there’s a solution for our overcrowded city that maximizes space efficiency, this could be it, but would you willingly live in a San Francisco apartment that was smaller than a hotel room?

I would, and here’s why:

-It would save me money. Uber-small units are the extreme solution to packing more people into crowded metropolis around the world. Rents are smaller and the furnishing needs are less than a regular sized apartment. Also, the utility bills are much lower and sometimes incorporated into the cost of monthly rent.

-It would motivate me to be socially engaged outside of the home. Nice apartments are great. But fulfillment comes from interacting with other people in the community, not staring at the walls or out the window.

-It’s green. If we choose to continue living in an urban environment, comprising a smaller footprint is realistically the only way to do so in a sustainable way. San Francisco has no room to grow, so we need to grow smaller and more efficiently.

-It turns back the clock. Remember college? Well, these apartments aren’t much smaller than your average single dorm room. And those days were some of the best of our lives.

What do you think? Could you be happy in a 12×12 apartment, or would you go insane? Supervisors have put off a vote that would allow the pint-size units until later this month.
