How Much House Fits in a 10’x15’ Storage Unit?

One of the most common reasons people use self storage is because they are moving. The second most common reason is that they don’t have enough space at home. In fact, these two situations make up nearly 70% of self storage rentals, according to industry trends reported on StorageCafe. If you are in the same boat as many Americans, you might find yourself shopping for storage.

A 10’x15’ storage unit could be the solution to your temporary or long-term storage needs. With 150 square feet of floor space and 1,200 cubic feet overall and if there are eight-foot ceilings, this size unit can accommodate a one- or two-bedroom apartment or up to four rooms of furniture when packed properly. To see if this size unit will fit your belongings, check with your moving professionals or the storage facility.

Will a 10’x15′ storage unit be large enough?

If you are unsure of your space requirements because you have a variety of furniture, household goods and boxes, it’s best to measure your items and plan out the space. With proper packing and stacking, here are some of the items you can fit in a 10’x15’ unit.

  • Sofa
  • Large appliances such as refrigerator and stove
  • Dining room table
  • Entertainment center
  • Piano
  • Bedroom set including mattress, dresser and nightstand
  • Outdoor patio furniture
  • Recreational items such as a jet ski or canoe

How much of my household do I need to store?

If you need to transfer your furniture and household goods from a small apartment to a storage space, a 10’x15’ unit may be the solution. Here are some common combinations of items that should fit nicely.

  • Two mattresses plus bedframes and headboards, two chests of drawers and nightstands, along with sofa, recliner, kitchen table and chairs, and coffee and end tables
  • Furniture from living and dining areas, plus refrigerator, bedroom furniture, and outdoor patio set
  • Desk and chair, bookcase and file cabinet, mattress and bedroom furniture, kitchen table, sofa and entertainment center
  • Contents of three bedrooms

In each of the above scenarios, you will be able to store some boxes as well. If you need storage for a larger apartment or house, you may need a bigger unit. However, you could still benefit from a 10’x15’ if you are looking to store portions of your household, such as things overflowing from closets and spare rooms or items cluttering your garage. Let’s take a look at just how much stuff from these areas may fit:

If you have boxes upon boxes of decorations, keepsakes, hobby collections, children’s schoolwork and odds and ends, this size space will fit several dozen boxes, depending on their size. You will also have room for furniture or household goods.

A 10’x15’ space is about the size of a spare bedroom, so visualize what items from your home could fit well together. Books you can’t part with, extra mattresses and blankets for overnight guests, bicycles crowding your garage, or even the spare bedroom set and antique dining table you inherited from a family member could fit into this space.

Furniture from a master bedroom, including a standard king-size mattress, headboard and frame plus dresser and nightstands, as well as extra boxes of household items, will fit. Make sure to measure larger items, such as dressers and mirrors, to be sure you have enough space for everything you intend to store.

What’s it going to cost me?

A big question when you know an expense will eat into your monthly budget is, “How much?” Prices vary throughout the United States. For example, the average price for a standard non-climate-controlled 10’x15’ unit in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma is $144/month, and in not-too-distant Omaha, Nebraska it’s $121/month. On the West Coast, the average cost for a 10’x15′ unit in Portland, Oregon is $234/month while across the country in Atlanta, Georgia it’s $273/month for the same unit size. And a 10’x15’ unit in Albuquerque, New Mexico averages $181/month.

Even if you’re not preparing for a move or your minimalist lifestyle has kept clutter at bay, you may be doing a home renovation, starting a business, or needing a place to keep the belongings of a loved one who passed away. No matter the reason, self storage has got you covered.
