There are plenty of ways to add a touch of nature to your home; and the easiest one is to bring in lots of greenery. Most often local flower shops will provide everything you need to set up your own green corner of heaven. Marcel Florist in Chicago is a good flower shop, offering a wide selection of plant life, including house, tropical and indoor plants and even aromatic herbs for a whole new, refreshing taste in your kitchen.

Before kicking off your urban garden project, make sure you’ve got everything prepared. You should clear out your balcony of unwanted or unused stuff, especially if you’re short on space like most renters are. Then make sure you choose the right plants according to your apartment’s orientation to the sun. If it gets plenty of direct sunlight, you can opt for dreamy, colorful, flowery plants that will fill your heart with joy every time you get out on your terrace.
Bougainvillea adores heat and can magnificently thrive on a hot, sun-drenched balcony. The same goes for geraniums which are also lovely plants, petunias, marigolds, mandevilla (Brazilian jasmine) or any cacti or succulents.

If your balcony sits mostly in the shade, things get tougher but not impossible. There are some plants which actually love shady places, including zygocactus, an uplifting plant which looks fabulous in either floor pots or hanging baskets all throughout the year, kentias, hellebores or ferns which also do well in part shade or dappled sunlight. But they will need regular watering.
We all know Chicago’s winters can be rather harsh so we must be really careful with our greenery. In fall you should take all cold-sensitive plants inside or store them somewhere indoors; I usually place mine in the windowsill so that they might be protected from cool air, yet allowing them to get plenty of light. Like everything else in life, it’s all about good balance and harmony.
