Bougainvillea adores heat and can magnificently thrive on a hot, sun-drenched balcony. The same goes for geraniums which are also lovely plants, petunias, marigolds, mandevilla (Brazilian jasmine) or any cacti or succulents.

If your balcony sits mostly in the shade, things get tougher but not impossible. There are some plants which actually love shady places, including zygocactus, an uplifting plant which looks fabulous in either floor pots or hanging baskets all throughout the year, kentias, hellebores or ferns which also do well in part shade or dappled sunlight. But they will need regular watering.

We all know Chicago’s winters can be rather harsh so we must be really careful with our greenery. In fall you should take all cold-sensitive plants inside or store them somewhere indoors; I usually place mine in the windowsill so that they might be protected from cool air, yet allowing them to get plenty of light. Like everything else in life, it’s all about good balance and harmony.
