John Winthrop Review
The apartment is okay. Its strength is the unit sizes, I think it was very efficient, space was large enough for my unit, with a separate kitchen and a huge storage room. However, for $1,455 a month, you could rent a 1br somewhere in Capitol Hill, so it depends how you really look at it. The facilities are pretty old since it's a very old building. In person, staff are very friendly and helpful, but electronic communications are not really their strength, just from a customer service perspective. Facilities-wise, location is great, but there's no parking until around mid August (for $300/month) at a different location, Pipes in my kitchen are so loud especially around 2 a.m., elevator (2nd oldest in the city) is always broken, a bit too often staff are unresponsive - the key is to literally catch them before they leave (which for me was not a good trait), but they are still very friendly and warm and helpful. Though I didn't renew my lease for this year (2020), it's still a good place to live overall.
No frills old building
I shopped around a lot and it was exactly what I was looking for. Cost on the lower end without the unnecessary amenities. That solarium sure is sweet, but I'm good without it. Pros: Location - walking distance to cap hill, downtown, SLU, far enough from capitol hill that you don't get all the late night noise. Value - lots of space for the price On site laundry-- just have to go during off hours and can do multiple loads (4x washers and 4x dryers) Lots of built in storage - dresser, kitchen storage Maintenance - Ian is the maintenance guy and is actually really proactive about things. Usually maintenance at this price point is a joke. Cons (mainly because it's an older building): Loud pipes , Thin walls, creaking floors Elevator is old, small, annoying to get in an out of, but better than nothing--has a door and cage door. Difficult to move large items by yourself, hold cage door with foot, while using rest of body and large item to keep open door Sirens - it's right across from the hospital. You sort of get used to it, but sort of don't Occasional late night/early morning shouting on the street, loud stereos, cars motorcycles racing onto the interstate, etc. Kind of a part of living in the city that's unavoidable. There's definitely areas where it's better, but it could be worse too. Kitchen layout--very little counter space No microwave or dishwasher
