New Small Apartment w/few Amenities

I've been living here for nearly two years, and it's been a mixed bag. The building is recently renovated so what's here is in good shape, but there's very little in the way of amenities—No Laundry Room or in-apartment laundry, no common area for cookouts or get-togethers, no elevator, not even tenant parking. There's also no super or building engineer so you have to make an appointment if you need something done. OTOH, there's a kitchenette, a largish common area that's sort of a dining room/living room mix, my bedroom (the only room in my apartment with windows!), and a "study" or spare room which right now I use mainly for storage. The neighborhood is mixed residential/business, and is a safe and pleasant place to live. It's a good apartment over all, and not too horribly expensive given it's in Jersey City—but I'd really like a laundry room, common area, and parking garage....

No Amenities, Street Parking Only, But Recently Renovated

I moved in about a year ago, in the middle of an ongoing divorce—and while this place isn't perfect by any means (no parking garage or lot, no patio for grilling or socializing, no elevator), it is a newly-renovated building with a nice if small kitchenette, one bedroom (the only room with a window), a "general area" that serves as living room/kitchen/dining room, and a small "study" or storage space. Jersey City buses stop right down the block, and the NJ Light Rail station is about a 8-10 block walk. There are several bars and restaurants of various cuisines including Japanese, Chinese, Mexican, upscale casual dining, seafood, bakeries, coffee bar (sit-down as well as takeaway) within a few blocks, a Supremo Supermarket two blocks away, laundromats/dry cleaning, barbershops, at least three preschools, a Pharmacy/UPS Store a block away, and Christ Hospital is five-six blocks down the street. The rent's on the high side, the trash room is down a steep flight of stairs (not easy for a retiree like myself to navigate), and maintenance isn't always as prompt as they could be—but on balance it's a good place for adults to live. Now if they could just convert the vacant lot next door into resident parking and a patio for summer entertaining....

Bad Parking, High Rent

If you work from home like I do, parking is a nightmare in this neighborhood because the city does street cleaning four times a week, so I'm constantly moving my car around. Although I received a discounted rate for my rent, it's still too high because rent in New Jersey has become outrageous. I make 72k per year and should be able to afford a nice one-bedroom apartment in a luxury building but instead all I can afford is an apartment with an awkward layout in a building with no amenities and no parking. Real estate developers and property management companies are running amok with no consequences and are making New Jersey unlivable and are contributing to the destruction of the middle class in this country. Now for some positives - I've found the maintenance workers in this building to be very responsive. I appreciate the DVORA app that my property management company uses, which makes requests very simple. I also like that I can pay my rent online with minimal hassle.

Refurbished But Not Luxury

For the price it's not bad given it's Jersey City, but I could wish that we had a doorman or some way that Fed Ex and UPS could leave packages securely inside. The super is not on-site so we have to call and make an appointment—that said, he's usually prompt, courteous and helpful. As for parking, it's on the street or renting a space some distance away which is hardly ideal—there's a vacant lot next to the building where it would be great to have it turned into parking for tenants. Since we're on a (fairly) main street with Christ Hospital about a quarter-mile away, we often hear ambulance, police and fire sirens at all hours. The apartment has high ceilings—unfortunately, that's where the over-sensitive smoke alarm is so I have to be careful when I'm cooking that I don't set it off! Lights are also ceiling-mounted, and it's too high to reach without a ladder so I need to call the super if I want to change my light bulbs. On the good side, the HVAC is very good, the kitchen and bathroom are up-to-date, and it's large enough for me and my cats.
