Renters’ Guide to The Woodlands

Let’s take a visit to The Woodlands, TX! This affluent Houston-area city is one of the nicest in Texas. In fact, in 2015, NerdWallet named The Woodlands the best city in Texas, and Niche.com considers it the 6th best city in the entire country for 2017.

Why? Well, there’s the great schools, high-end shopping, and nearly endless outdoors to enjoy, for starters. Living up to its name, The Woodlands is home to 7,790 acres of lush, green nature, including 205 miles of biking and hiking trails, along with the massive Lake Woodlands.

And all of that wonderful scenery is packed into an area less than 10 times smaller than Houston and only about 50% larger than nearby Sugar Land. But you can see the difference for yourself, since Houston is just 31 miles away from The Woodlands. And even Austin is just 162 miles away, making The Woodlands’ location quite convenient.

The Woodlands’ weather leaves plenty of time for enjoying the outdoors too, with toasty summers, where temperatures average around 70⁰F to 100⁰F, and mild winters, which fluctuate from 40⁰F to 65⁰F. Summer starts near the end of May and continues to around mid-September, while winter visits from the end of November until early February.

Unfortunately, The Woodlands does share the rest of Texas’ risk of extreme weather, with both hurricanes and tornadoes known to hit the area.

On the other hand, The Woodlands is a sprawling city where getting around on foot is difficult. And that leads to a fair amount of traffic, as the many residents rely on cars to get around. Also, though the warm weather can be a treat at times, the heat and humidity can also grow uncomfortable many days.

If you’re in the mood for something a little exotic, Fogo de Chão Brazilian Steakhouse is worth a look.

While The Woodlands doesn’t have much in terms of local sports, the short drive to Houston gives you access to one of the biggest pro sports markets in the country, including the Houston Rockets, Astros, Texans, and Dynamo.

Of course, that doesn’t mean you can’t challenge yourself to a little athletic contest of your own via the annual Muddy Trails 5K and 10K marathons or the Texas Ironman triathlon.

For something a little more cultural, check out the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, where you’ll find all kinds of performances and concerts. And kids will love The Woodlands Children’s Museum. Or just catch a movie at Cinemark Tinseltown.

If you decide to make The Woodlands home, you’ll also have a few cool annual events to look forward to, which include the Waterway Arts Festival in April, the Red, Hot and Blue Festival and Fireworks Extravaganza every July 4th, and The Woodlands Children’s festival each November.

Tips for Renting in The Woodlands

Ready to make the move to The Woodlands? We thought you would be! But let’s take a second to check out some of the local tenant laws first.

When you apply for a rental, you’ll be asked for an application fee. If you’re rejected, the city’s laws require the landlord to either tell you why or to refund your fee and any deposit.

Under Texas law, your landlord is also required to tell you about any known problems, keep areas in and around your home safe, and to let you enjoy your home.
