Nestled along the sparkling coastline of Southern California, San Diego beckons visitors with its perfect blend of laid-back coastal charm and dynamic urban energy. But beware, the massive variety of fun things to do in this exciting city can be a little overwhelming! To give you some ideas, we talked to some of the locals about their favorite things to do in San Diego, and they pointed us to a myriad of activities that cater to every taste and preference. Whether you’re an outdoor thrill-seeker, a foodie, a history buff, or a fashionista, the city has something special for everyone.

In this post, we’ll share some of the best things to do in this coastal paradise, courtesy of those who call it home!

1. Spend an Afternoon on the Patio at We Olive & Wine Bar

San Diego local Jair Damian’s happy place is perched above La Jolla Cove, sipping artisanal wine and eating delicious tapas at We Olive and Wine Bar.

“We Olive La Jolla is a must-visit destination,” he says. “Guests can experience California’s rich flavors through daily complimentary tastings of the bar’s exquisite California Extra Virgin Olive Oils and gourmet vinegars. It also features California small-production artisan wines, olive oil-inspired tapas, and craft beer. The venue is known for hosting events that celebrate local artisans and producers, and the stunning ocean and coastal views from the outdoor patios make it a perfect spot for locals and visitors to unwind and savor the flavors of California.”

2. Commune with Nature at the Torrey Pines State Reserve

“A trip to San Diego isn’t complete until you’ve visited the Torrey Pines State Reserve,” says San Diego urban adventure guru and founder of The Go Deck, Deanna Ratnikova.

“Located atop majestic bluffs and named after the extremely rare Torrey pine tree that grows here, the reserve is home to some of the most acclaimed and scenic trails in San Diego, ranging from accessible strolls to heart-pumping hikes.

Start your visit at the Visitor Center housed within a 1920s historic lodge. Here, you can learn about free guided tours and pick up a trail map. After looking for dolphins or gray whales from the clifftop viewing platforms, head down to the Torrey Pines State Beach, which stretches over 4 miles. You could walk as far South as La Jolla Shores at low tide, a 10-mile roundtrip trek! For those with mobility needs, there is a beach wheelchair available at both the North and South parking lot kiosks.

When you’re ready for lunch, take a short drive south to discover Torrey Pines Gliderport. Fuel up at their café while watching gliders soar off and around the cliffs. The gliderport is nestled within two stunning establishments: the emerald fairways of Torrey Pines Municipal Golf Course — one of the most scenic and difficult public golf courses in the country — and the Salk Institute, where world-class scientific research is conducted in iconic buildings designed by Louis Kahn.”

Good to Know: Though the reserve is free to visit, be prepared to pay a parking fee (unless you’re lucky enough to score one of the free spots along Highway 101). Also noteworthy is that Salk Institute tours are available by reservation only.

3. Get Lost in Live Music Under the Stars

“I love listening to live music in my free time,” says Peter Evering, business development manager at Utopia Property Management. “I find solace under the stars at Radys Shell or the cozy ambiance of Music Box. There’s a certain magic in those moments when the music resonates with the night, creating an atmosphere that feels both intimate and memorable. If you’re a music enthusiast, this is something you should definitely check out.”

4. Enjoy Authentic Italian Food in Little Italy

“If you’re a foodie or local products buff, you’re going to have the time of your life in Little Italy,” says Evering. “Weekends take on a special flavor at Little Italy Farmers Market, where the air is infused with the aroma of fresh produce and artisanal crafts. The vibrant food court is a delightful culinary exploration, offering a diverse array of flavors that cater to every palate. It’s more than just a market; it’s a sensory experience that embodies the essence of community.”

5. Explore the City’s Plentiful Parks

Evering gave us some excellent suggestions for outdoor exploration in the city, too. “For aquatic enthusiasts, Mission Bay (the country’s largest aquatic park) is a great place to start. You can never go wrong with sailing into the sunset, kayaking along its shores, or simply soaking up the sun on the beach. It’s a tranquil retreat where the rhythm of the waves harmonizes with the pace of life. If you like hiking, the diverse landscapes of Mission Trails Park offer a great escape. With its rugged terrains and serene lakes, you’ll never run out of great scenery to enjoy.”

“Cabrillo National Park, perched high above the city, is my go-to for breathtaking views,” Evering adds. “The panoramic spectacle is complemented by a hike down to the tide pools along the Pacific Ocean. It’s a seamless blend of scenic grandeur and a touch of adventure, offering a moment of quiet reflection amidst nature’s awe-inspiring beauty.”

6. Get Centered & Calm at the Self-Realization Meditation Gardens

Steven Wade Adams, a cultural and humanitarian photographer based in San Diego, gave us a fantastic lead on the perfect spot to relax and unwind.

“If you need a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life or a respite from a frantic vacation schedule, a hidden gem known mostly to the locals in North San Diego County is the Self-Realization Meditation Gardens in Encinitas,” he says.

“Tucked just off the busy Coast Highway, the Garden offers meticulously maintained tranquil gardens, replete with a koi pond and boasting stunning views from a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. This peaceful place is perfect for meditation, self-reflection, and rejuvenation. As a cultural photographer, I sometimes visit here with a camera in hand, but most of the time, I visit for no other reason than to take a quiet stroll in the simple tranquillity of the surroundings. Treat yourself to a visit to this serene oasis and experience the rejuvenating power it holds. You won’t be disappointed!”

Good to know: Entrance to the gardens is free (that’s right, free!). There is also an adjacent gift shop with interesting books, clothing and various gift items from India that are also worth a browse. In winter, you can stay late enough to enjoy beautiful sunsets (gardens close at 5 PM).

7. Enjoy Fresh Seafood on the Bay

Hotel del Coronado boathouse

Bluewater Boathouse Seafood Grill is unquestionably one of San Diego’s most unique over-the-water dining experiences,” says Derik Morse, general manager of The Bluewater. “It’s located in the former Hotel del Coronado boathouse, which opened in 1887 as the architectural model for the beloved hotel itself. Offering tastings, wine pairings, and other monthly events, this thriving part of the Coronado community combines the most sustainable seafood in San Diego with views of Coronado’s Glorieta Bay and the famously turreted Victorian landmark.”

8. Get Styled at Posh Fashion Valley

No SoCal vacation is complete without a shopping trip with a California trendsetting expert! “Shopping at Fashion Valley in San Diego takes on a new dimension of luxury when guided by the expertise of a personal stylist,” writer, personal stylist, and fashion expert Jaquelyn Wahidi told us. “A stylist can navigate boutiques and department stores with the client to create a curated shopping experience tailored to their individual preferences, body shape, and style personality. Beyond a typical shopping outing, it can be a transformative, confidence-boosting adventure.”

“It’s not just about shopping; it’s about discovering and embracing your unique style amid a fashion-forward haven,” says Wahidi. “This tailored approach makes it an essential and fulfilling activity for locals and visitors alike.”

9. Explore the Cultural Haven of Balboa Park

The perfect place to spend a day, Balboa Park has a little something for everyone. The Botanical Building and meticulously tended outdoor gardens surrounding it are a horticulturist’s paradise. You’ll find exotic plants, koi ponds, winding paths, and more. The park also houses the San Diego Museum of Art, the Fleet Science Center, the Air & Space Museum, and the Museum of Man. The California Tower, an iconic park symbol, offers panoramic views of the city, and Spanish Colonial Revival architecture can be found throughout.

Balboa Park offers live performances, theater under the stars at the Old Globe Theater, and live music at Spreckels Organ Pavilion. The park also comes alive throughout the year with art shows, festivals, and family-friendly events.
