8 Easy Ikea Hacks to Revamp Your Apartment

Share this article:

It’s no secret most of us have something in common when it comes to the interior design of our homes: at least one furniture piece bought from Ikea. They’re cheap, easy to buy, easy to install (depending on who you ask), and are neutral enough to go with any room. These perks also come with an added benefit: with the right Ikea hacks, you can create something new, unique, and stylish out of items you might initially think are boring. Here are eight hacks you can use to give your apartment a visible upgrade, all using products from Ikea:

Craft a vanity out of a floating shelf

Vanities often seem like space-hogging, unnecessary items you don’t need in an apartment, especially if your place is not as big as you’d like. But by using this clever Ikea hack from A New Bloom, you’ll wind up with a beautiful vanity that will add flair to your living room or your bedroom without taking up too much of your valuable space. All you need is a hanging Ikea shelf, two tapered legs and some wood stain from Lowe’s, and a drill to put it all together, so you don’t need to be a master woodworker to complete this project.

A boring Marius stool can become a statement piece in your home in a couple of minutes with this hack from Bang On Style. This is one of the cheapest seats you can find around, and all you’ll need is a fluffy pillow and a glue gun to craft a functional, comfortable, and eye-popping piece for any room in your house. You can paint the stool in your favorite color if you want to add some extra flair to the design, and you don’t necessarily need to use a fluffy pillow — you can pretty much stick anything to these stools to create something new and entirely you.

If you often find yourself misplacing your accessories or you’d like to put some of your favorite pieces on display, this is another hack you can finish in a few minutes. All you’ll need is some Ikea cork coasters, a roll of masking tape, and a couple of spray paint cans in your favorite colors. One O created the trendy dishes in the picture with white and gold paint, but you can go crazy both with the colors and the design, and if you’re feeling adventurous, you can even try your hand at some freehand drawing with acrylic paint. Just make sure you double coat everything!

Are you even living in 2020 if you don’t have a couple of succulents around your apartment? Whether you got on board with the trend or haven’t had the chance yet, you can build your own unique terrarium out of any Ikea lantern. All you need to do is seal the bottom part, add some gravel and potting soil on top, make sure everything is adequately moisturized, and plant some moss and/or succulents. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also paint the lantern. And if you’re new to home gardening and need a step-by-step guide, Thou Swell has a detailed explanation

One of the easiest Ikea hacks you can use to revamp your apartment is to cover one or more items in gold paint. You’ll need a $50 Ikea shelf with a metal frame and some gold spray paint, which you can easily buy online. Just remove the trays, apply a few coats of color to the frame, and you’re done! Universal spray paint sticks easily to metal, and you’ll end up with an attention-grabbing piece in no time. This Ikea hack from Young House Love uses marble contact paper to cover the glass shelves, for an added touch of elegance.

If you want to make your living room Pinterest-worthy, consider repurposing a plant stand or crafting a ladder out of a few pine boards and Ikea metal handles. A ladder where you can store some fluffy, color-coordinated blankets or a few beautiful scarfs will add a comforting, rustic element to your living room. If you really want to impress and know your way around a drill, craft a ladder using this DYI method from Always Rooney. It uses a few store-bought elements and takes less than an hour. Alternately, get a ready-made plant stand shaped like a ladder and paint it in your favorite color.

Divide a room with shelving units

One way to give your living room a completely new look is to separate it with an Ikea bookcase. This simple hack works best with Kallax units, which are famous for being versatile starting pieces for many Ikea hacks. They come in many shapes and sizes, so you can create your design if you combine different pieces. This hack is especially useful if you’re living in a studio apartment and want to divide the bedroom and living areas, or if you want to separate your home office, like interior designer Jessica Wellington did with this beautiful redesign.

Turn a shelving unit into a sideboard

The Kallax isn’t just useful for changing the layout of your living room. You can craft a beautiful sideboard with it as well to add some personality to your home office or dining area. To craft this sideboard for your living room, you’ll need to place the shelving unit horizontally and add legs to it. You can skip this step, but besides giving the shelving unit a more finished feel, the legs will also make the room look more spacious. This trick from Ikea Hackers also uses a couple of revamped drawer units to give the sideboard some personality and to tie it in with the overall design of the room.
