Best Restaurants in Tempe

Tempe, AZ, is a multicultural city, encompassing members of the Hispanic, Asian, Muslim and African American communities. And, this diversity translates into the local restaurant scene, as well — making this city a foodie’s dream.

No matter the duration of your stay and whether you’re just visiting or planning to move here permanently, here are the best restaurants in Tempe (in no particular order):

Aunt Chilada’s

Besides a punny name, this place has a variety of tempting choices of Mexican food and drinks. No need to fear leaving here with an empty stomach — the portions are big and flavorful. And, even if the restaurant is packed when you get there, the margaritas and self-service chips and salsa will make the wait a breeze.

Alter Ego

Alter Ego was voted the Best Hotel Restaurant in Phoenix in 2020, and just one look at their tasty treats will make you understand why. This eclectic place spot takes Tempe’s culinary tradition and gives it a fun twist. If you’re reluctant to try fusion cuisine, Alter Ego is the place that will change your mind.

If you ask any ASU alum what the best burger joint is, The Chuckbox will certainly be on the list. You’ll be able to recognize it by its Wild West theme that makes it stand out in downtown Tempe.

Opened in 1972, The Chuckbox is still cooking burgers the old-fashioned way — over an open mesquite fire. But, that’s not the only tradition they keep: They also only accept cash, so don’t forget to bring your wallet.

Top of the Rock

Top of the Rock is the place where romance thrives. The amazing view, along with the delicious farm-to-table cuisine, make this restaurant a must-try in Tempe — especially if you’re planning a romantic date. While you’re there, don’t miss out on their Happy Hour, and be sure to get a taste of their hand-crafted cocktails and expansive wine list, which will pair wonderfully with your meals.

The Perfect Pear Bistro

If you insist on supporting local suppliers, The Perfect Pear is the perfect spot for you. With options such as butternut squash rigatoni on the menu, the food is as yummy as it is unusual. There’s also a spacious patio where you can enjoy their selection of local craft beers — because nothing goes better with G-ma’s Mac than a good beer.

Salut Kitchen Bar

Most people would agree that dining in a strip mall is not the most pleasant experience. That said, not everyone has been to Salut Kitchen Bar. Here, the mimosas will draw you in, but the mix of Mediterranean and American cuisine will make you want to stay. The patio is also dog-friendly, so bring your pooch and have their picture plastered on the Dog Wall. Maybe you’ll even be lucky enough to get the spot next to Spud the pug.

The Dhaba

A Dhaba is a roadside restaurant in India that serves local food and doubles as a truck stop, as well. Needless to say, the dining experience is casual, and the food is prepared in the traditional way. As such, The Dhaba in Tempe tries to stay true to Punjabi food and culture, while also celebrating other culinary experiences that influenced its cuisine. Don’t expect fancy plating here, just scrumptious food served in a cozy environment.

Four Peaks Restaurant

This establishment is a Tempe landmark and a must-see location. After touring the brewery, grab the salmon BLT that everyone’s raving about and taste the craft beer that you just witnessed being made. The perfect place to watch a football game, you’ll fall in love with the atmosphere, as well as the food at Four Peaks.

CrĂªpe Bar

What better way to finish off a good meal than with a great dessert? And, what better way to finish this list than with a dessert place that has made crĂªpes its specialty? Previously known as Truckin’ Good Food, the owners decided to park their truck for good and turn CrĂªpe Bar into a permanent location where fine dining meets a casual setting. As you might expect, the variety of sweet and savory crĂªpes is an excellent choice for breakfast or lunch.

While you’re visiting Tempe, forget your diet and bring your appetite because this town will enchant you with its cuisine and turn any fussy eater into a gourmand.
