The city is only about 15 miles from Miami, 20 miles from Coral Gables, and 222 miles from Orlando.

The weather here's usually sunny – and a little balmy. Winter lows average just above 60ºF, so no need for mittens and a scarf! The summer highs are usually around the upper 80s.

There are really only two seasons here – wet and dry. May through October is when you should expect rain, though you’ll usually find November through April to be much drier.

If you’re a sports fan, nearby Miami has you covered. It has its own MLB, NFL, and NBA teams, the Marlins, Dolphins, and Heat. Locally, Miami Gardens has a very active track and field club, the Xpress.

For local shopping, there are over a dozen stores and restaurants at the Miami Gardens Shopping Plaza. Another popular place is the Dolphin Plaza, with stores, salons, restaurants, and plenty of parking. Of course, Miami is also close by and is known for trendy South Beach boutiques and name brand stores.

For a day of fun with the kids, you can’t beat Action Town Florida in nearby Hialeah. They have everything you need for a great outing, including bumper cars, jump castles, miniature golf, and laser tag.

More family fun can be had at Everglades Safari Park, where you can learn about the local wetlands and the animals that live there, all during a boat tour. For free entertainment, head over to Hialeah Park Racing and catch the horse races. Betting is optional!

Each summer Miami Gardens hosts the Jazz in the Gardens Music Festival. which features the top jazz performers from around the world, along with some great food and art. The Jamaican Jerk Festival is also not to be missed, particularly if you’re a fan of Caribbean food and music.

Public schools here are part of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools. There are six elementary schools and two high schools in the city. One of the elemntary schools is the magnet school North Dade Center for Modern Languages Elementary, which was included on Niche’s 2016 list of best public schools.

There are several top notch higher education options in Miami, but Miami Gardens itself is also home to Florida Memorial University, a member of the United Negro College Fund. St. Thomas University is also located here. It’s a Catholic university with outstanding law, business, and theology programs.
