The Presidio's Fort Winfield Scott was the one-time headquarters of the Coast Artillery Corps, which defended San Francisco Bay. The officers who served here lived in stately Mission and Colonial Revival residences flanked by pines, palms, and pristine lawns, tracing the uphill curve of Kobbe Avenue. Built over a 13-year period beginning in 1902, these historic residences range from one-bedroom apartments to seven-bedroom single-family homes. They all feature well-equipped and beautifully restored kitchens and baths, spacious rooms, and views of the park, bay, or bridge. Behind the homes are detached garages, and beyond those the beloved Fort Scott organic community garden. In existence since 1915, the garden is a beautiful mix of wild and cultivated greenery, making it a favorite haunt for humans and birds alike – in particular, keep your eyes and ears peeled for owls!
