Essential Eats in Winston-Salem

A revitalization of Winston-Salem has been in the works for the past decade, and it’s come with a restaurant renaissance!

That’s not to say everything worth eating here is new — in fact, one of our top picks first opened in 1930. But with all the recent development coming to The Dash (Winston-dash-Salem, get it?), there are more great places to eat here than ever before.

If you don’t know where to start, try noshing your way through this list. But be warned — there are a lot of great bakeries to try, so take your time!

Camino Bakery

What’s that saying? “An apple galette a day keeps the doctor away?” Pretty sure that’s it.

Get your daily apple galette (or croissant, pain au chocolat, baguette…) at Camino Bakery, your source for all things flaky and decadent. Pair it up with one of their seasonal drinks, like the Cocoa Rose, an espresso and mocha blend sweetened with fragrant rose syrup.

Take your treats to go, or post up at one of their tables to borrow some Wi-Fi or people-watch.

Dewey’s Bakery

Everyone else on this list is a spring chicken compared to Dewey’s Bakery. This Winston-Salem institution has been baking tasty goodies since 1930! Even though their cookies and cakes are now available nationwide, there are still two locations in town where you can pick up or dine in.

Dewey’s specializes in Moravian cookies. These super thin cookies are packed with flavor and perfect with a cup of hot tea. Try salted caramel or Meyer lemon. For something a bit bigger, indulge in a fresh cinnamon roll or a rich slice of Moravian sugar cake.

The Humble Bee Shoppe

Muted colors and toned-down design? Not at The Humble Bee Shoppe. This little bakery is awash in bright pastels — both in the decor and the baked goods.

Everything on the menu is hand-made by owner Brittany (aka Bee) including melt-in-your-mouth macarons, and vegan and gluten-free treats. Bee also makes show-stopping cakes, decorated in gold leaf or drizzled in marbled glaze. There isn’t much room to sit in this itty-bitty bakery, so plan to take your goodies to go.

The Katharine Brasserie & Bar

For an unfussy — but delicious — French dining experience, visit The Katharine Brasserie & Bar at the Kimpton Hotel in Winston-Salem. The decor is modern and chic but comfortable, with dim lighting to set the mood and highlight the stunning bar. Servers are friendly and happy to explain any French terms you may not know.

Start with oysters on the half shell and a glass of bubbles before you dig into a traditional dish like Chicken au Poivre Flambé. (That’s seared chicken with pepper.) Save room for dessert — the Chocolate Pot de Crème is legendary.

The Katharine seats by reservation only, so make sure to plan ahead!

Meridian Restaurant

Meridian Restaurant is a true farm-to-table experience. The menu changes daily based on what’s in season and available from local farms. Expect to see dishes inspired by the food of the Mediterranean, like pasta and plenty of fresh seafood.

From their seats in the simple, stylish dining room, guests can watch the chefs hard at work in the open kitchen. Everything is made in-house here, from the ravioli to the sausages to the mozzarella. This attention to detail has landed Meridian on the National Elite 10 Best of North Carolina list two years in a row!


Mozelle’s “fresh southern bistro” is a bright, cheerful ode to the south in Winston-Salem’s West End. The simple, elegant decor feels like a place to bring a date on a special occasion, while the excellent hearty food is unfussy and delicious.

Mozelle’s features upgraded southern goodies — just like grandma used to make, but with a little twist. Tomato pie gets a little extra depth from Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese and a crispy hand-rolled double crust. The shrimp and grits find an umami boost from prosciutto and a little bite from a sherry cream sauce. And the “gourmet” meatloaf is wrapped in bacon and topped with melted Havarti cheese and tomato marmalade.

Ryan’s Restaurant

Ryan’s Restaurant is a classic steak house in a peaceful, wooded section of Coliseum Drive along Silas Creek. The dining room feels like an old-fashioned library, with walls lined in wood panels and ceiling-height bookshelves. From the restaurant’s tree-lined deck, it’s easy to forget that you’re just minutes from downtown Winston-Salem.

Don’t worry about finding something that you’ll like here — this menu is extensive. Appetizers include oysters Rockefeller, decadent truffle mushroom dip and a large selection of salads. For your entrée, choose from plenty of cuts of aged steak, or try confit duck breast or fresh Maine lobster.

To Your Health Bakery

For those with dietary restrictions who still want something sweet, To Your Health Bakery is a gift. With gluten-free, vegan, keto, paleo, and allergy-free options on their menu, owner Anna Simeonides hopes to make sure that everyone can find a treat to enjoy.

If you’re celebrating a special occasion, choose from over 50 cake options like chocolate espresso and peaches n’ cream. Or pick up some gluten-free donuts or cookies to take home — because you never need a reason to get donuts!
