Wellness Design Ideas & Other Tips to Create Healthy Spaces

More than ever, health (and particularly mental health) is becoming one of the most popular topics among architects and interior designers. Live-work-play is now live-work-play-heal-learn. This means we need spaces where we can feel relaxed, inspired, creative and productive — especially in the era of work-from-home — without getting overwhelmed. Your apartment is no exception. How do you think Feng Shui became so popular?

If you live in a rental apartment and you want to make sure the space you live in boosts your health rather than drains it, we have a few wellness design tips that are easy to implement. Here’s what you have to do to transform your apartment into a healthy home:

Purify with houseplants

The air we breathe is probably one of the last things we consider when it comes to our health. But it’s actually the most important. So, how can we ensure that the indoor air we breathe is pure and healthy? Introducing… houseplants. Houseplants do more than just look nice — they improve air quality. Plants like spider plants, aloe vera and snake plants naturally filter out pollutants. You can even add some plants that thrive in humid environments in your bathroom. Plus, caring for houseplants also reduces stress. Start with a few low-maintenance varieties and reap the wellness rewards.

Bathe in natural light

Humans need sun exposure for Vitamin D and properly functioning circadian rhythms. This leads to improved sleep quality, which is one of the pillars of good health. So, how can you bring more light into your apartment? Open your blinds during the day to let that healthy light in. Position your desk or reading nook near windows when possible. Plus, natural sunshine will give your mood a boost. If natural light is limited in your rental, you can use daylight mimicking bulbs and lamps.

Use non-toxic materials

This is one piece of advice that you can apply in many areas of your life, from cookware to clothing. For a healthy home, avoid plastic and other synthetic materials. Chemicals in some building materials and furniture can negatively impact indoor air. When possible, opt for natural and non-toxic items made of stone, wood, metal, wool, cotton, bamboo, etc. For authentic wellness spaces, avoid paints and adhesives with volatile organic compounds or formaldehyde.

Incorporate ergonomic furniture

When it comes to wellness design, furniture has an essential role in creating healthy spaces. Prevent pain and discomfort by choosing ergonomic chairs, desks and beds. Look for adjustable features, lumbar support and posture-friendly shapes. Proper ergonomics at home prevents injury and strain. Speaking of furniture, a good quality mattress is also a must if you’re looking to have a restful sleep and avoid back or neck pain. It might cost more to buy a brand-new, good-quality mattress, but this is a long-term investment in your wellbeing.

Create space for movement

To maintain good health, we also need to move our bodies. When our time is limited or until we finish work and can hit the track or the gym, we can also take short breaks to stretch at home. Don’t let small quarters limit your workout! A helpful wellness design tip is to clear areas for yoga, stretching or even bodyweight exercises. Use compact equipment like resistance bands, stackable weights or adjustable dumbbells. Remember: Regular movement keeps your body and mind energized.

Craft a soothing oasis in your bathroom

When it comes to healthy spaces in a home, the bathroom is a great place to consider. There are several wellness design tips you can implement for this area of your apartment. For example, you can transform your bathroom into an at-home spa. Use soft towels, calming colors and scented candles to delight the senses. You can also add baskets made of natural fibers for storing your towels or a wood tray for your tub if you have one. You can even install a new showerhead that mimics rain or one that has massage options. You can also try aromatherapy with essential oils, a very popular trend when it comes to wellness spaces. A tranquil, rejuvenating bath or shower helps you de-stress.

Surround yourself with mood-lifting colors

Color psychology shows that certain hues can uplift us, while others help us stay calm or focused. For example, light blue, green and yellow evoke positive emotions and are often used by designers who focus on healthy spaces. So, the easiest thing you can do is paint a bold accent wall in a cheery tone. Choose colorful art, pillows and accessories in mood-enhancing shades. Let color brighten your home and outlook.

Make your bedroom a sleep sanctuary

One wellness design goal to consider is to make your bedroom a sanctuary for quality sleep. Start with eliminating clutter and screens that are known to overstimulate you and, thus, reduce the quality of your sleep. In fact, a technology-free bedroom is a must if you’re looking for deeply nourishing sleep. Keep your sleep space for rest only, somewhere you can unwind and recharge. Embrace soothing scents, blackout curtains and comfy bedding.

Wellness design experts also recommend adding a headboard if you don’t have one as this helps create a more secure feeling over a bare wall. Wellness professionals also advise using warm and dim lights in this area of your apartment. A reading lamp will also do the trick as it offers sufficient lighting to provide a relaxing vibe.

Boost mental focus

Your home environment has a direct impact on your concentration and motivation, and this is where wellness design comes in. To create your very own healthy spaces for work and focus time, surround yourself with images and quotes that inspire you. Minimize clutter than can cause mental drain or make you feel overwhelmed. Even if you don’t have enough space for a separate room for your home office, you can set up a dedicated work area that is free of distractions — and then keep this space clean and tidy. Natural elements are also helpful, including green walls or terrariums.

Declutter and deep clean

Regularly decluttering and deep cleaning eliminates germs and brings a sense of order. As you discard unused items, you also free up mental space. Healthy spaces are clean, organized living spaces that support your well-being, both emotionally and physically, so make it a habit to declutter your home. Get rid of excess possessions and deep clean to foster a sense of order and mental clarity. You can even ask for friends to come over and help! This would make a great opportunity to catch up and spend time together.

Be part of the community

Connecting with your neighbors and socializing with them are important steps in creating a healthy, happy life. Building a sense of community and the feeling of belonging can enhance your emotional well-being, which is essential for your overall health. You can use communal spaces like yards, pools, apartment gyms or community centers to meet and interact with your neighbors. This is particularly helpful if you are new to the area or the city and you need a mood boost or you’re simply looking to make friends.

With a little creativity and effort, your rental apartment can benefit from wellness design and become a nurturing space, a real healthy home.
