Want to Be Part of the Action in the Middle of Music City? SoBro Is the Way to Go!

If you’ve never been here, you may be surprised at the stunningly vibrant nightlife scene in downtown Nashville. SoBro is a couple of blocks south of Broadway (hence the SoBro name), the main drag where the honky-tonks are loud, and the streets are packed every Saturday night!

Along with skyrocketing development in the area comes some impressive high-rise apartments you’ve got to see! Let’s take a look at some of the fantastic amenities living in SoBro has to offer.

Where is SoBro?

The south side of Nashville’s downtown area, or “the district” as it’s known, begins south of Broadway. Its northernmost point ends at Peabody street. It runs from the Cumberland River to its east all the way to the Gulch to the west.

History

When it was first established back in the 1800s, SoBro was very different than it is now. It was actually called “Black Bottom” for a while because it had a tendency to flood, leaving behind the dark black mud of the underdeveloped areas surrounding.

Fast forward to 1996, and SoBro began a meteoric rise as one of the most upscale metropolitan areas in greater Nashville. Starting with the construction of the Bridgestone Arena, the region saw crazy development. It’s now home to tons of fine dining establishments, gorgeous luxury high-rise apartment buildings and iconic businesses like Third Man Records and Hatch Print Show.

Lifestyle

The lifestyle in SoBro is active, to say the least. The sidewalks are packed with just as many people coming and going to work as it is with tourists! Oh, and have we mentioned the live music? So much live music.

What to Do

Aside from restaurants and bars (we’ll get into those in a second), SoBro has so many things to do and see!

The majestic fountain in front of the home of the Nashville Symphony is impressive enough. Once you step foot inside the Schermerhorn Center, you’ll fall in love. Come enjoy some of the most gorgeous music in Nashville! You didn’t think we’re all about country music, did you?

Ok, ok, Nashville does love its country music too. Many huge names in country music have been “discovered” here and have called Nashville home. It would be a crime not to commemorate country music’s deep roots at the Country Music Hall of Fame And Museum. I mean, there is a show named for our city all about it, after all.

Some of the biggest names in music can be seen at the Bridgestone Arena, from the Rolling Stones (postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions) to Post Malone and much more. Also, Bridgestone is the home of the famous Nashville Predators hockey team. Interested in hockey? You’re in great company – Nashville takes a lot of pride in our hockey team!

Take a quick hike across the Shelby Street Pedestrian bridge over the Cumberland River, and you’ll arrive at Cumberland Park. While you’re on the bridge, don’t forget to stop and take a selfie, the view is fantastic. It’s not at all uncommon to see blushing brides having their bridal shoots there. With a splash pad, playground/work of art, and plenty of green space, it’s the perfect place to hang out for the afternoon. In May-October, on select Sundays from 5:30-8pm, bring some lawn chairs and take in some live jazz. Food trucks are available for dinner!

Where to Eat & Drink

6th & Peabody

The Ole Smoky Distillery and Yee-Haw Brewing Co. border this cute little dining and drinking space complete with a small community green space. Play a competitive game of cornhole or relax and watch the action. Either way, you’ll have a cold drink and Nashville’s signature hot chicken to enjoy.

Etch

With a full bar, two private dining rooms, and a chef’s bar, Etch provides a gorgeous atmosphere to enjoy its continentally-inspired menu by award-winning chef Deb Paquette. A modern fine-dining gem in the heart of SoBro, Etch is the perfect date place.

The Southern Steak and Oyster

“The Southern” as the locals call it, has a menu featuring much more than steak and oysters – it’s a celebration of traditional southern food with a very modern twist. It’s got a pretty fancy cocktail menu to match! Show up for brunch (but place your reservations early!) and enjoy people-watching on the patio.

Pinewood Social

Enjoy some bowling served up with signature gourmet dishes at Pinewood Social. In the summertime, head out back for some bocce, ping-pong or take a dip in the pool. (Yes, they’ve got a pool. It gets hot here in the summer, ya’ know!) Need to get some work done? They’ve got a fantastic coffee shop with quiet tables and WiFi right in the restaurant.

Moving to SoBro

Real Estate Snapshot

It may not come as a surprise that SoBro apartments are pricier than the Nashville average. The average rent for a Nashville apartment runs about $1,428, and SoBro rides in at a cool $1,922.

If you ask those who live in there, they’ll tell you that the luxury high-rise apartments with stunning city views are well worth the price. Not to mention its walkability to workspaces, bars, restaurants and shopping areas.

Transportation

Public transportation is abundant in SoBro. Walk to the corner of pretty much any city block, hop on the metro bus, and you’ll get anywhere inside the metro area within 30 minutes.

Schools & Employment

SoBro isn’t a particularly family-friendly neighborhood. Those who choose to live there with children usually opt for one of the many private schools nearby.

As far as employment – SoBro living is a great choice. It’s teeming with corporate headquarters and offices as well as multiple mega-hotels. The unemployment rate is well below the national average and there are plenty of job opportunities in SoBro and its surrounding areas.
