We like the location very much. And the apartment is well maintained, all the appliences work well and the apartment is very pleasant. The apartment lacks a linen closet, garbage disposal, microwave and adequate kitchen storage.

Living in Missoula, MT

If you dream of diving into the wilderness but would prefer not to be completely isolated, then Missoula may be the place for you. This small town is the second-largest city in Montana and offers the perfect balance of urban flavors mixed with a love of the great outdoors. The bustling downtown area is home to a thriving dining and brewing scene, emphasizing the farm-to-table movement. But with mountains at your doorstep, it is easy to escape into nature as long as you can bear with the long, harsh, snowy winters. The cost of living in Missoula is significantly higher than the rest of Montana, primarily due to the cost of housing. Still, Missoula is a great renting option for people of all ages, especially families and students enrolled at the University of Montana.

Renting in Missoula, MT

Most people living in Missoula are renters. The city offers a broad mix of housing styles, from historic buildings and single-family homes to newer apartment-style communities and condos. The downtown area, which concentrates a large part of the activity, is the most exciting place to live, though renting here comes at a premium. Apartment communities such as Emma Dickinson Orchard Homes or Westside are among the more affordable neighborhoods. Montana does not state a maximum amount that landlords may collect from their renters. However, landlords typically require a deposit that’s equivalent to one to two months’ rent. This amount must be returned to the renter within ten days of the end of the lease agreement if nothing is being deducted, or 30 days otherwise.

WinCo Food is an employee-owned store offering discounted groceries and bulk food for budget options. One of the most popular grocery store among renters, Albertson, has several locations throughout Missoula. Renters also shop local in one of the three farmers' markets running weekly, each with unique vendors and experiences.

Transportation in Missoula, MT

Missoula is relatively compact, and the downtown area is highly walkable, with shopping, dining, and entertainment opportunities easily accessible by foot. In addition, Missoula offers multiple bike paths as an alternative to walking. Public transportation is present but limited: The Mountain Line offers 14 regular routes throughout town, but some neighborhoods are underserved. The buses run on weekdays with special routes on Saturdays and holidays. Therefore, Missoula is mostly car-reliant outside of some pockets of neighborhoods. Most renters use their cars to run errands or commute throughout the city and surrounding towns. Amtrak also offers bus connections from Missoula to Williston, ND, where passengers can board the train on the Empire Builder line.
