*UPDATE 1/27/25* The “friendly” employee and onsite manager called me this morning in response to my review. When I let him know that I hoped he was calling to complete my refund and terminate the contract that I “completed” online he became rude and aggressive. Again, it appeared to me that the online process was not completed as I could not add the temporary DOL paperwork that accompany my expired WA state ID. He began to lecture me about not picking up his phone calls to confirm my ID. I have a busy and unconventional work schedule and no obligation to complete contracts on his time. Presumably his income or bonus program may be dependent on being the “friendly” face of this scam. Month to month contracts, exorbitant price increases with little or no notice, terrible customer service and a business model in which the end game is to charge you a $200 fee and auction your personal belongings as you try to resolve payment increases and lack of access to units during posted business hours. I have disputed the charges through my credit card company and have made a complaint to the BBB (better business bureau). *ORIGINAL REVIEW* I found SecureSpace Self Storage online and reserved a unit at a discounted rate. I went in person and checked out the unit. I wanted to secure it in person at the office w the friendly employee after viewing it. He let me know that he could not honor the advertised rate in person in the office and told me to finish my payment online to access the 50% off first month special and then come back for the keys. Ok, slightly frustrating not to walk away w the keys but, no big deal. Went online, filled out my personal info, including payment info. The last section includes uploading a pic of your ID. My ID card is expired (though I have the official temporary full page document that is issued by the DOL while you wait for your ID card in the mail). It is not possible to upload the temporary document online. Ok, no prob. So, I planned to finish the transaction on site and in person when I had time during my days off about a week later. A few days later upon reviewing my credit card statement I see 2 charges from Secure Space self storage. (I should note that the 4 different people from the sales team called me repeatedly, throughout the week. Starting early in the morning and throughout the day and left voicemails each time.) Gave a call to the customer service number. Got a person on the line quickly and was told that there is no way to do the refund over the phone and that I have to do that onsite at the Ballard location. I asked to speak to the billing department, he indicated that there wasn’t one. I asked if there was a supervisor in the call center to help with the problem as I need the charges to be reversed before I will have time to go in person. The phone agent would not direct me to a department that could deal with the issue and hung up on me. Admittedly I was being firm and expressing frustration, but not in a non-professional or inappropriate way. I plan to go in person to get the charges reversed. But, do not plan do business with this company moving forward. ... Read more

These folks are great. Just moved in and the new manager is solid and attentive, and the vibe of the building is a little older and funky! I'm not a fan of the price increases but if you ask them about it, they're honest and open about the reasons and it isss pretty common to see at storage faculties so I cant blame them, I do like their insurance alternative, and they have good security systems. Great location too, right by the shops on the Ave. I will say though... if a practice like price increases is common but its a bad practice that none of the people who shop there like (see the other reviews), you should probably think about that? Its sad a place like this gets a bad rap for an industry standard, but hey. Capitalism in 2025, amirite? ... Read more

Much like a lot of other reviewers here, I had the same experience. This place is a scam. I moved in for $162/months and after 4 months they raised my rate to $262. That is a 61% increase. I'm expecting another increase soon too. The same thing happened to me when Public Storage took over the Ballard Storage near the locks. Scam industry. They've also reduced access hours (no discount) and the last time I had to go pick something up the lights were out and I had to use the light on the phone to see. EDIT 9/25/2025: Not surprisingly they've increased our rent once again. This time from 262 to 332. The reason? See below: "We're writing to inform you of a necessary adjustment to the rental rate for your unit #S507. Starting November 1, 2025, the monthly rent for your space will be $332.00. This change ensures that we can maintain the high standard of service you expect from us. We understand that any change in pricing is significant, and we want to assure you that this decision was made after careful consideration. Our team is dedicated to providing you with the best possible storage experience, including ongoing maintenance and upgrades to our facilities." This place is a total rip-off do NOT move in, you'll regret it. ... Read more

Previous had a top floor unit here for more than 7 years. Left because of changing circumstances. Recently found I needed storage again. So far, I am NOT IMPRESSED! Basement level unit-smelled dank & musty as soon as elevator door opened. Person working the desk the day I came to switch out their lock for mine, after renting on line, was rude and condescending towards me & confrontational about my service dog in training (did not want to let him come into the building with me but "allowed it this one time" since we were there less than a minute to swap my lock for theirs, get paperwork & return their lock and go. Other issues as well with this individual's attitude then & on another occassion. I didn't get storage to get attitude from a desk jockey 10-20 years younger than I am. Honestly, overpriced based on damp, dank basement units & this staff person's attitude & VERY, VERY LIMITED ACCESS HOURS THAT START AT 9AM & END AT 6PM. ... Read more

I moved in for a rate of $109/month in mid-November, and 3 months later at the end of February, they gave me 30 days notice that my bill would be going up to $185/month. A 70% price increase after 3 months is essentially a bait-and-switch. I was so happy to have found what seemed like a decent nearby storage unit, but apparently this is not it. Please be warned and do not believe their prices. If you insist on renting, get a contract and be prepared to move when it's over. ... Read more

I have not had a good experience here. Within a year of beginning to rent here the fee increased by 50%. I was charged for not showing my renters insurance, unlike others they did not remove the fee when I provided documentation. I also had to communicate with them too many times about things that I had already provided because the staff and systems kept changing in. It was clean and temperature controlled. Not a bad location. But not worth the hassle and increasing cost. ... Read more

Greetings: About six weeks ago I discovered a discrepancy with our billing account at SecureSpace Storage Ballard, which added an additional charge to our account. I contacted the office and determined the charge was the result of record keeping error and easily resolved. I emailed the documents needed to remove future charges and requested a refund of the overpayment. I was advised that only one person could authorize the refund and they were not available. I was told the same thing the next four times I inquired about the refund. I was about to push this matter to the District Coordinator when I received a follow-up call from Kimberly, the Assistant Manager at the Ballard location. After reviewing the issue with Kimberly she asked me if she could call me back in 5-minutes, to which I agreed. In less than 5-minutes Kimberly called back to tell me the refund was completed and she would send a receipt for the transaction. Kimberly is exactly the kind of person you want in a front-facing management role. She is a good listner, kind, quick on her feet, resourceful and she follows through with her commitments. My compliments to SecureSpace for good hire and thanks Kimberly!!! ... Read more

Clean, easy to access, safe, and fantastic customer service. Can't really ask for more or better. The facility itself is clean, well maintained, well lit, and generally gives a sense that time and effort is being put into maintaining and monitoring it. They appear to have some additional services like mailboxes, but we only used their storage offering. The staff was always extremely helpful, to the point of going well above and beyond. I saw them helping people load or unload big heavy furniture in an effort to be helpful, not because they were required to or instructed to. Accessing the facility is very easy, and while the loading bay might be blocked by cars sometimes, for the most part it was clear and easy to use. We were able to quickly and easily unload an entire truck to their loading dock without issue. ... Read more

Frequently Asked Questions

Storage units available at SecureSpace Self Storage - 4714 Ballard Avenue NW include the following amenities: Climate-Controlled, Indoor, Drive-Up Access, Retail Available, Onsite Manager, Contactless Renting, Security Camera, Parking, Credit Cards Accepted, Elevators, First Floor Access, Multi-Level Storage and Online Payment. Depending on what you need to put away in storage, you can discover there are some things you absolutely need, so make sure you check with the facility manager that you'll find everything you need on site.

This particular storage facility provides self storage units of different sizes, ranging from 24 to 100 square feet. Space is not an issue! If you have more belongings to store, or simply bulkier items or even vehicles, you should go for larger storage units.

You already know how much stuff you need to put in self storage, so figuring out the unit size you need is the next step. Smaller units such as 5'x5' or 5'x10' spaces can usually be filled with the amount of items you would normally store in a closet: a few chairs and lamps, sports equipment, garden tools and some boxes.

Moving on to larger sizes, imagine the 10'x10' and 10'x15' units as similar to a bedroom or a living room – larger pieces of furniture, sturdier equipment and bicycles can fit here. Finally, a 10'x20' unit has enough space for the contents of a 3-bedroom house, while the larger 10'x30' space easily accommodates the contents of a loaded semi-truck.

Monthly prices for units offered by SecureSpace Self Storage - 4714 Ballard Avenue NW start from $40 and can go up to $138 for larger spaces.

Accessibility and quickness are key when it comes to storage, so drive-up storage units are generally regarded as very convenient. Pull your car right up to your storage space, load, unload, and you're good to go! However, if you're mostly storing temperature-sensitive items, you should rather consider indoor storage units.

Climate-controlled units maintain consistent temperatures and humidity levels all year round, making them perfect for all your sensitive items. Moisture and varying temperatures can damage a whole host of things, and that is why a lot of people choose to use climate-controlled units to store items like wooden furniture, electronics, artwork, documents and photographs, collectibles, antiques, etc. If the belongings you're storing are important to you, you should consider renting a climate-controlled unit.
