Dear Chris Sambar, I am writing to formally express my deep dissatisfaction with the customer service I received at one of your New York Public Storage locations. I have been a loyal customer of Public Storage for several years, including prior use of your New Jersey facilities where I experienced excellent service. Unfortunately, my recent experience in New York was not only disappointing but concerning from a health and safety standpoint. I arrived at the facility to drop off items and was under the impression that the lock on my unit was a combination lock. I later realized it was a company-issued lock, and I did not have the key with me. I asked the on-site employee if the lock could be clipped and informed him that I would gladly purchase a replacement lock. I was initially told that this was not something they could do. The employee then provided me with the contact information for a locksmith, whose service ultimately cost me $180. When I questioned why the company could not clip the lock themselves, I was told that the person who performs that service only comes once a month. This explanation was confusing and contradictory—first being told it could not be done at all, and then being told it could only be done on a specific day of the month. While waiting for assistance, after approximately one hour, I asked to use the restroom. I was told that it was “out of service.” Whether that was accurate or not, I find it extremely unprofessional for an employee of such a large company to work in a facility without access to a functioning restroom—especially when dealing with customers on-site. As a pregnant woman, I was effectively told to walk in the cold to the nearest gas station, which was both inappropriate and unsafe given my condition and high blood pressure. To make matters worse, after visibly seeing my frustration and distress, I was then told that I would need to wait outside for my cab because the employee needed to close the doors. Being pregnant and having high blood pressure, being asked to wait outside in the cold further aggravated my condition and could have resulted in a medical emergency. I am extremely disappointed that after years of loyalty to Public Storage, this is the level of treatment I received. In addition, since moving back to New York, my storage rate has nearly doubled over the last three years, yet the quality of customer service has significantly declined. The contrast between this experience and the excellent service I received at your New Jersey location is striking. Something clearly needs to be addressed—whether it be employee training, customer accommodation policies, or basic health and safety considerations. No customer, especially a pregnant one with a known medical condition, should be treated in this manner. I hope this matter is taken seriously and that appropriate steps are taken to ensure this does not happen to another customer.
