Moved to Portsmouth from across the country and found the Safeway Storage team to be a delight! They were more than accommodating to my needs. I had a 6'x12' trailer with no where to park it while I found a place to live & went to work (the hotel I was staying at wouldn't allow it), they let me park it in their lot at no charge. Those 2 gentlemen treated me as if I was their niece. And when it came time to downsize my unit (3 weeks later) it was the smoothest process (no paperwork or payment issues). Whenever I would go there to either take things out or put stuff back in someone would always come say "hi" and offer help. I truly appreciated that because on a security level I liked knowing that they check to see who is there in the loading dock because God forbid an unsavory character roaming around the building. The only reason I've discontinued my use of the facility is because I'm moving. I would highly recommend this place to anyone. ... Read more

After being away 9 months I returned to "Safeway" storage to find the roof leaking on our stuff. While it was still raining I showed the manager, who could not have cared less. "We don't guarantee anything," the manager told me. That's right, they don't even guarantee to keep your belongings out of the rain. He asked me if I had insurance, which I did, but insurance covers accidents involving things like hurricanes and fire. It doesn't cover protection from something that any reasonable person would expect from a rental storage business - like a roof that does not leak. We lost a queen bed, old family dresser, and a nightstand. They offered us nothing. No money back. No compensation whatsoever. If there was an "I'm sorry" I don't recall it. Its hard to find the owner. This weasel has obviously been taken to court before. Speaking of unsavory creatures, the place is also infested with mice. We had turds on a lot of our stuff and I saw some scurrying through an empty locker. I can't remember a worse customer service experience than this one. ... Read more

Frequently Asked Questions

Storage units available at Safeway Storage - 135 Mc Donough include the following amenities: Climate-Controlled, Indoor, Onsite Manager, Security Camera, Gate, Parking, Credit Cards Accepted, Multi-Level Storage and RV Storage. Depending on what you need to put away in storage, you can discover there are some things you absolutely need, so make sure you check with the facility manager that you'll find everything you need on site.

You already know how much stuff you need to put in self storage, so figuring out the unit size you need is the next step. Smaller units such as 5'x5' or 5'x10' spaces can usually be filled with the amount of items you would normally store in a closet: a few chairs and lamps, sports equipment, garden tools and some boxes.

Moving on to larger sizes, imagine the 10'x10' and 10'x15' units as similar to a bedroom or a living room – larger pieces of furniture, sturdier equipment and bicycles can fit here. Finally, a 10'x20' unit has enough space for the contents of a 3-bedroom house, while the larger 10'x30' space easily accommodates the contents of a loaded semi-truck.

Accessibility and quickness are key when it comes to storage, so drive-up storage units are generally regarded as very convenient. Pull your car right up to your storage space, load, unload, and you're good to go! However, if you're mostly storing temperature-sensitive items, you should rather consider indoor storage units.

Climate-controlled units maintain consistent temperatures and humidity levels all year round, making them perfect for all your sensitive items. Moisture and varying temperatures can damage a whole host of things, and that is why a lot of people choose to use climate-controlled units to store items like wooden furniture, electronics, artwork, documents and photographs, collectibles, antiques, etc. If the belongings you're storing are important to you, you should consider renting a climate-controlled unit.
