Read some helpful reviews of Public Storage at 17481 North Outer 40 Road, shared by real renters with genuine experiences and honest opinions.

To start with, the facility is kept clean, which is nice. However, my main problem with the facility is the fact that the overhead entry door has been out of order for the better part of seven months. It was out in July when I had a large moving truck go there to pick up a load from storage. I have been there several times since (the most recent today) and the door is still inoperative. Everytime I have asked about it, I get the same answer, which is an emergency work order has been put in. It doesn't take seven months to fix the door. It is dangerous for large trucks to go to the back door and have to back in, especially when other vehicles are in there. We paid for access to both doors, and that is what we should get. Otherwise, you need to start refunding money. I don't know who is really in charge, but that person needs to man up and do the responsible thing and get the damn door fixed. I would love to have direct contact with whoever is the "head honcho", so I can find out the real reason why this matter has not been resolved. Please explain why. Personally, I truly believe that the company (or it's representative) just plain does not want to spend the money, and is trying to get away with it for as long as possible. If that's not the case, I'm sure I, as well as others, would be interested in hearing an answer as to, "Why?". ... Read more

The facilities are clean. That's about where the positive interactions end. The carts are often difficult if not impossible to find, and when you have a third floor rental unit, it's extremely inconvenient. Also, I was there once and someone was having an entire personal sale out of their unit (this was not an auction... this was a woman who set up a Facebook sale I found out and then was opening the gates for people to come in). She asked my name and seemed to block entry. When she realized I had a unit there and not there to buy something, she "let me pass." How that is allowed to happen I will never know. The biggest issue I have is the scam of their forced insurance. I have an insurance policy already that MORE than covers what theirs does. There was no way to say no to it when I signed up, it said you could cancel at any time. I also signed up completely online as I've been going through surgery and treatment for breast cancer. When I realized why I was being charged such a huge amount every month (they charge almost $20/mo for insurance) I told them I wanted to cancel the insurance as I never needed it in the first place. The girl I spoke to on the phone said that I would have to come in to physically sign that I don't want it. I explained to her that I was physically unable to get there to sign papers. She told me in essence "too bad" and that there was NO way whatsoever to cancel it without coming in. Not on the app, not over the phone, not on a docusign... And if that is the actual case, that is absolutely insane. We can sell and title whole cars to someone who lives out of state completely via phone/email/docusign. And if we need a "wet signature" we can overnight documents to them to send back. But yet I can't cancel a forced monthly fee that I don't need? That sounds like a terrible business practice and like something that is only used to get more money out of people. So my advice here is do not rent from them. I have rented at other facilities that do not force insurance (they may require proof of insurance but I have that all day). And the girl I spoke to on the phone was reason enough to never rent there again. Do better, Public Storage. Your insurance is a total scam. ... Read more

Was at public storage the other day and met the most funniest manager that goes by the name Shae. She was very polite, respectful and generous even though some of the customer gave her a hard time about a push cart that was out of her control, she handled them with respect. She helped me find my unit easily and told me about the 24 hour access, she knows her company, thank you Shae and nice doing business ... Read more

While handling some estate responsibilities, I had occassion to meet Shae, the bright young lady managing the Chesterfield Public Storage facility. Shae helped us navigate the ever-changing on-line offers on long-term unit rentals and found us an excellent deal. Hoping that Public Storage takes note of her customer relations skills, and her energy and enthusiasm for her job. . . She's, definitely an asset to your team ! ?? ... Read more

My rent price has increased twice in the last year, and every time I check on my things the moth ball scent gets worse and worse. I started at $79 a month and am up to $119 with increasingly worse conditions. I was not to my knowledge even notified of the rent increase and I’m definitely going to be looking for a new storage facility asap. Really disappointed ... Read more

DO NOT USE THIS FACILITY! I rented a 10x15 unit for 6 months when my family relocated to St. Louis. Imagine my surprise when we went to move out and our entire unit smelled of mothballs. There were also moths in the unit so the treatment wasn't even effective. I contacted the property manager who basically said this is the risk you run when renting a climate controlled unit. She said my only recourse was to file an insurance claim, which of course was denied. The property manager essentially blamed other people for putting mothballs in their units. However, the odor is so powerful that I believe Public Storage was attempting to get in front of a moth problem at this facility. There is no way my unit could smell that awful from secondhand exposure. I just moved into a new house with a newborn and all of my items (furniture, clothes, mattresses, baby gear, etc) are currently sitting in the garage until we can figure out what to do with them. I NEVER would have stored my stuff here had I known this was a possibility. We will need to discard several furniture pieces as professional cleaners couldn't even get the smell out. I'm so upset, and the lack of compassion shown by the property manager is what prompted me to write this bad review. I will be taking legal action to try and get reimbursed for the cost of the unit. I just wanted to warn others not to rent here. Plenty of other storage facilities in the area that likely take better care of their customers and their belongings! ... Read more

Long time user of this place. Everything is great but the lack of cart situation has become unacceptable. This 3 story facility is only accessible to upper levels by elevator. With NO carts this becomes extremely difficult. Please solve this problem! Edit: Cart situation has become worse. The last 8 times I have been here there were no carts available to use as they are all locked in the office. ... Read more

Make sure you do your research before signing a contract with Public Storage. We moved out of the country and needed a 10x25 space to hold some of our household goods for up to 7 years. Public Storage advertised the lowest rates so we signed a contract. After only 3 years, we had to take a trip back to the US to move our goods to another storage facility (Storage Q in Festus, Missouri owned by a nice couple). It was well worth it. What we learned about Public Storage (and other corporate-owned storage facilities) is that they hook you in at a low rate and begin raising rates steadily, thinking that people would rather pay the higher rate than go to the trouble to move again. Our rate started at $138 per month and after three years, we were paying $421 per month (a 205% increase). Even after the first year our price rose by 54% (which is way beyond the cost of inflation). I called them several times and they said that I could rent one of their other storage units at a lower price and move my goods to that one - which obviously is an absurd thing to have to do. By policy, they allow you to delay one increase, only one time for three months. After that, they do not negotiate and keep up the steady increases. Had I kept the unit for seven years, I would have ended up paying the price of a two-bedroom apartment. Public Storage is unscrupulous. Just doing 5-minutes of research you will find many similar stories. So my recommendation is that if you need a rental unit for more than 6 months, do not rent from Public Storage. ... Read more

We have been long term renters at this facility. When we recently needed to add more space, I made an online reservation which put our new units on a different floor from our current unit. Diane was able to easily accommodate our request to remain on the same floor and process our new rental agreements without any issues. She is professional, polite and very knowledgeable. ... Extremely clean, secure and warm inside during winters. Your car drives into the building so when you load and unload you are right at the elevator. Cooperative staff is quick to help. I needed a bigger unit and the nice lady found me one near my old one so I would not have to cart my stuff all over the place. I do miss the carts they had by the elevators to move stuff around in . I hope they bring those back. ... Read more

Frequently Asked Questions

Storage units available at Public Storage - 17481 North Outer 40 Road include the following amenities: Climate-Controlled, Indoor, Drive-Up Access, Retail Available, Onsite Manager, Truck Rentals, Contactless Renting, Security Camera, Gate, Parking, Credit Cards Accepted, Elevators, First Floor Access, Multi-Level Storage, Online Payment and RV Storage. Depending on what you need to put away in storage, you can discover there are some things you absolutely need, so make sure you check with the facility manager that you'll find everything you need on site.

This particular storage facility provides self storage units of different sizes, ranging from 25 to 360 square feet. Space is not an issue! If you have more belongings to store, or simply bulkier items or even vehicles, you should go for larger storage units.

You already know how much stuff you need to put in self storage, so figuring out the unit size you need is the next step. Smaller units such as 5'x5' or 5'x10' spaces can usually be filled with the amount of items you would normally store in a closet: a few chairs and lamps, sports equipment, garden tools and some boxes.

Moving on to larger sizes, imagine the 10'x10' and 10'x15' units as similar to a bedroom or a living room – larger pieces of furniture, sturdier equipment and bicycles can fit here. Finally, a 10'x20' unit has enough space for the contents of a 3-bedroom house, while the larger 10'x30' space easily accommodates the contents of a loaded semi-truck.

Monthly prices for units offered by Public Storage - 17481 North Outer 40 Road start from $24 and can go up to $202 for larger spaces.

Accessibility and quickness are key when it comes to storage, so drive-up storage units are generally regarded as very convenient. Pull your car right up to your storage space, load, unload, and you're good to go! However, if you're mostly storing temperature-sensitive items, you should rather consider indoor storage units.

Climate-controlled units maintain consistent temperatures and humidity levels all year round, making them perfect for all your sensitive items. Moisture and varying temperatures can damage a whole host of things, and that is why a lot of people choose to use climate-controlled units to store items like wooden furniture, electronics, artwork, documents and photographs, collectibles, antiques, etc. If the belongings you're storing are important to you, you should consider renting a climate-controlled unit.
