Horrible company. Don't use. I was at this unit for six years until THIS company took over a few months ago. They raised the rent by over 50% and then gave us a week's notice to change the locks that we had bought from the previous company (meaning I had already paid for a lock when I moved in that was up to their standards) to very expensive ones or they would be charging us $50 to cut it off and then charging us for the lock. Thankfully I lived near there but what the hell are people supposed to do that don't. Horrible customer service for a horrible company. Gave notice, emptied, cleaned and swept unit and get a text the next morning they are charging me for ANOTHER month because a piece of plywood from THEIR unit wall is still in there............ And when I called to actually talk to a manager he didn't let me get a word out before screaming at me very aggressively and loudly. DO NOT RENT HERE. Edit: I will not be changing my initial review but I will add that the company called me back and made things right. But I will warn you I believe they were only made right for me because I had never signed a contract with them. Just keep that in mind when renting. The manager of this property Chris still needs to be fired. There is no reason you should be aggressive and yelling at customers ... Read more

When we moved to St Paul this was owned by a local small business and offered decent rates with no extra fees. I rented out the smallest outdoor unit they had for $37 a month. A little over a year ago, Five Star Storage bought them out and their business has been very frustrating. Our rent was "adjusted" from $37 a month to $61 a month over the last year, a 65% increase. I was also notified of an expensive mandatory monthly charge for insurance, only avoided by proving with documents that I had my own insurance (which I did through my renter's policy with State Farm). More recently, I was notified of a $50+ fee that would be applied if I didn't buy a particular lock (that was quite expensive) and change out my existing lock within 7 days. It seems to me that the new ownership is choosing to maximize profits by whatever means possible, rather than foster customer loyalty. We have cleaned out our unit and cancelled our lease, and I do not recommend doing business with five star storage. ... Read more

It used to feel like a mom and pop shop… However, it has changed to a very corporate and expensive storage unit operation. It is nearly impossible to talk to a human, and the rate increases are absolutely ridiculous for an unheated unit. I regret paying so many years. ... Read more

DO NOT USE THIS STORAGE COMPANY. The absolute worst experience I’ve had with a company. We went there about a month ago to store a machine at our storage unit and their elevator was broken. We had to switch units to downstairs and ended up taking up two units. We paid for both and they have our credit card on file. We assumed they would just charge our credit card and we were good to go. We went on a cruise for a few weeks and were out of the country. We get back and my husband talks to the wife and lets her know we’re coming to get our equipment out of one unit and will remove it. She seems friendly and says okay that sounds good. Mind you this was just a day ago. My husband goes this morning with a delivery vehicle and his code isn’t working to get in. Someone lets him in and he empty’s out both lockers to bring the equipment to the new locations. The husband comes around the corner SCREAMING at my husband and our delivery driver that they’re trespassing and we’ve been evicted. I call the wife to try to discuss things and she hangs up on me. Absolute worst customer service I’ve ever dealt with and would NOT recommend ever going through this company. There’s a storage unit right up the street that would be a better fit than being screamed at by management. Zero emotional intelligence or professionalism and I wish I would have read the reviews before doing business with them. It sounds like this is a habit for the husband to lose his temper and scream at people that are renting from them. STAY AWAY!!!! ... Read more

By far the worst storage facility in MN, and my job is cleaning out lockers so I've been to most of them. The wife seemed friendly but the old man will start yelling at you for the most petty things. Then he acted like he wanted to fight me when I yelled back at him. Hilarious. As if I'm going to just let someone approach me that way. Hope you had fun cleaning up the mess from the locker after banning me. I got everything I wanted anyway. ... Read more

Frequently Asked Questions

Storage units available at Five Star Storage - 1500 Marshall Avenue include the following amenities: Climate-Controlled, Indoor, Drive-Up Access, Onsite Manager, Truck Rentals, Contactless Renting, Security Camera, Gate, Parking, Credit Cards Accepted, Enclosed, Multi-Level Storage, Online Payment and RV Storage. Depending on what you need to put away in storage, you can discover there are some things you absolutely need, so make sure you check with the facility manager that you'll find everything you need on site.

This particular storage facility provides self storage units of different sizes, ranging from 20 to 360 square feet. Space is not an issue! If you have more belongings to store, or simply bulkier items or even vehicles, you should go for larger storage units.

You already know how much stuff you need to put in self storage, so figuring out the unit size you need is the next step. Smaller units such as 5'x5' or 5'x10' spaces can usually be filled with the amount of items you would normally store in a closet: a few chairs and lamps, sports equipment, garden tools and some boxes.

Moving on to larger sizes, imagine the 10'x10' and 10'x15' units as similar to a bedroom or a living room – larger pieces of furniture, sturdier equipment and bicycles can fit here. Finally, a 10'x20' unit has enough space for the contents of a 3-bedroom house, while the larger 10'x30' space easily accommodates the contents of a loaded semi-truck.

Monthly prices for units offered by Five Star Storage - 1500 Marshall Avenue start from $34 and can go up to $359 for larger spaces.

Accessibility and quickness are key when it comes to storage, so drive-up storage units are generally regarded as very convenient. Pull your car right up to your storage space, load, unload, and you're good to go! However, if you're mostly storing temperature-sensitive items, you should rather consider indoor storage units.

Climate-controlled units maintain consistent temperatures and humidity levels all year round, making them perfect for all your sensitive items. Moisture and varying temperatures can damage a whole host of things, and that is why a lot of people choose to use climate-controlled units to store items like wooden furniture, electronics, artwork, documents and photographs, collectibles, antiques, etc. If the belongings you're storing are important to you, you should consider renting a climate-controlled unit.
