What customers are saying

4.9/5 - 282 Reviews

Read some helpful reviews of Carmel Drive Self Storage at 550 West Carmel Drive, shared by real renters with genuine experiences and honest opinions.

I’m giving this storage unit 3 stars because while it’s safe, trustworthy, and secure, the community vibe and management style are something to be mindful of. I recently moved back in with my mom after years of being a solo traveling van lifer. I drive a minivan that doubles as a camper, it's covered in colorful flower stickers, and I never camp in it while visiting Carmel. I was born and raised here—I am aware of how this city can be a stickler towards people who live unconventionally or "stand out" in general. During my move, I was frequently visiting my mom’s storage unit to sort and organize my things. That meant van doors open, boxes out—normal moving stuff—and apparently my activity was attracting negative attention. People saw my campervan and assumed I was setting up camp there. That’s when the manager, Larry, confronted me angrily, saying there had been several complaints about me camping on-site. He threatened to call the police and terminate my mom’s lease if it happened again. This interaction caught me off guard—this was the first time I was hearing about the complaints at all, and I knew I hadn't done anything wrong. But suddenly it felt like I had to tiptoe around visits and “blend in” just to avoid further trouble. After a few tense weeks, I decided to speak to Larry directly. Once we actually talked, he was much calmer and understanding. Later, my mom also spoke with him and pointed out how it was wrong to threaten with calling the cops and termination without doing a proper investigation first. Larry admitted he took long-term customers word as truth, which made him resistant to hearing my side of the story in our initial interaction. From this experience, here are a few things to note if you’re considering renting a storage unit at this location: • Carmel is watchful. People notice everything, and they may jump to conclusions quickly. • If you’re in transition, plan ahead. Spending extra time organizing might look “off” to some here. • Clear communication helps. Talking to the manager directly made all the difference. • Know the culture. Carmel values appearances; even small misunderstandings can escalate. Everything’s been cleared up between Larry and I now—I can visit my mom's storage unit in peace again. I’m sharing this just as something to keep in mind if you’re renting here, since it’s in a very central location in Carmel. Take it easy, and choose kindness. ?? ... Read more

It was easy to access but a little hard to figure out where my lot was because it didn't show where the gate was in relevance to my lot or a "North" indicator. The stall and area was very clean and the placement of the provided lock was easy to find. The internal drive is nice and wide. Exiting the first time was a little awkward as there was someone behind me as I was leaving and hard to backup to the electronic gate key placement. I'm sure I'll get used to it the more I use it. ... Read more

Frequently Asked Questions

Storage units available at Carmel Drive Self Storage - 550 West Carmel Drive include the following amenities: Climate-Controlled, Indoor, 24 hour access, Drive-Up Access, Onsite Manager, Contactless Renting, Security Camera, Gate, Kiosk Available, Credit Cards Accepted, Multi-Level Storage and Online Payment. Depending on what you need to put away in storage, you can discover there are some things you absolutely need, so make sure you check with the facility manager that you'll find everything you need on site.

This particular storage facility provides self storage units of different sizes, ranging from 25 to 400 square feet. Space is not an issue! If you have more belongings to store, or simply bulkier items or even vehicles, you should go for larger storage units.

You already know how much stuff you need to put in self storage, so figuring out the unit size you need is the next step. Smaller units such as 5'x5' or 5'x10' spaces can usually be filled with the amount of items you would normally store in a closet: a few chairs and lamps, sports equipment, garden tools and some boxes.

Moving on to larger sizes, imagine the 10'x10' and 10'x15' units as similar to a bedroom or a living room – larger pieces of furniture, sturdier equipment and bicycles can fit here. Finally, a 10'x20' unit has enough space for the contents of a 3-bedroom house, while the larger 10'x30' space easily accommodates the contents of a loaded semi-truck.

Accessibility and quickness are key when it comes to storage, so drive-up storage units are generally regarded as very convenient. Pull your car right up to your storage space, load, unload, and you're good to go! However, if you're mostly storing temperature-sensitive items, you should rather consider indoor storage units.

Climate-controlled units maintain consistent temperatures and humidity levels all year round, making them perfect for all your sensitive items. Moisture and varying temperatures can damage a whole host of things, and that is why a lot of people choose to use climate-controlled units to store items like wooden furniture, electronics, artwork, documents and photographs, collectibles, antiques, etc. If the belongings you're storing are important to you, you should consider renting a climate-controlled unit.
