I like the actual house I live in. It's a nice size in a good neighborhood, decent location for where I live. I liked it at the rate I originally rented it at last year. I just found out my rent is going up 13% from last year. This is a ridiculous increase for 1 year, and there's no room for negotiation. The house I live in is not worth the price they're now going to ask for in rent regardless of "inflation" costs. FirstKey is such a large company, they have to cover their overhead over buying, paying for, maintaining 1000s of homes across the US, and they're passing that cost along to us as the renter. It makes it impossible to think about saving money for a down payment for a home. Companies like FirstKey are not making it easier for people to live in affordable homes. They're making it harder by buying up all the lower range starter level homes and charging more in rent that people would pay for a mortgage. It lowers the inventory of homes in that price range, driving up demand and therefore home prices. Not to mention, maintenance requests are a 2 weeks wait unless it's an emergency, but if you call them and tell them it's an emergency, and they decide it's not, then they charge you money, so it makes a person reluctant to call and let them know anything needs fixed. This is one thing that apartment complexes, or rental homes by individual owners, are way better for everyday maintenance needs.
