I want to offer a clear and neutral account of my experience renting from FirstKey Homes. The primary issue has been the overall energy efficiency and structural condition of the home. During the winter, the house becomes extremely cold, and during the summer, it becomes extremely hot. These temperature extremes are not related to the HVAC system itself, but to the home’s age, insulation gaps, foundation movement, and general structural deterioration. Despite repeated requests, these issues have not been addressed in any meaningful way. Although some small repairs have helped temporarily, the core problems require structural upgrades the company is unwilling to make. I have been told that I “accepted the home as-is” at move-in, even though the conditions directly affect the habitability of the space for my infant and young child. I even requested a transfer to another FirstKey property to remain a tenant, but no support was offered. Another major challenge is the company’s communication structure. There is no local office to walk into, and nearly all staff work remotely. Every request must go through a call center or email, then through multiple layers of corporate approval before anything can happen. When local staff have tried to be helpful, they are often prevented from taking action because of this internal bureaucracy. Based on my experience, the company seems to prioritize profit over habitability. For example, when I gave notice that I planned to move, the home was immediately listed at a higher rent despite having no updates and ongoing structural issues. Future renters should be aware that this is a very hands-off management style, and that meaningful support may be difficult to obtain.
