The data presented in the Great Schools score seems to be out of date. I wouldnΓÇÖt rely solely on the number presented here. In fact, IΓÇÖm quite surprised.Great strides have been taken in the past five years with new leadership. Principal Todd McCauley and Superindentnt DR. Jerry Lewis are rare administrators actively involved in every aspect of the school; Principal McCauley knows every kidΓÇÖs name, is visible and approachable by kids and parents alike, and is a problem solver. Every morning he greets kids at the school entrance with a high five. This is a rural community with vast income disparity and a high rate of growth, and all of the associated challenges. WeΓÇÖve found Whitson to be welcoming and inclusive to all students. Several recent hires are young and bilingual. Inclusivity and community building are common themes in most classrooms. There are definite holdbacks to the ΓÇ£old daysΓÇ¥ though, when the district was overwhelmingly low income and rural. However these teachers and office staff are the exception to the rule, weΓÇÖve found, and itΓÇÖs apparent how strong leadership makes a difference. Oh, and the active PTO mustnΓÇÖt be overlooked! We looked at private options and adjacent districts, but Whitson (and Henkel Middle and Columbia High) are providing this growing community with a solid educational foundation rare in rural districts.

Over the last ten years, this school has changed dramatically. It has evolved from a small rural school with a weak PTA to one that is thriving with excellent parent involvement. I actually attended this elementary school almost 30 years ago and my family moved away specifically so that I could attend a school with more advanced programs. The White Salmon School District is evolving and getting better and better; this is due in large part to the parents who advocate for there children, support school levies, and fund raise for special projects. I am happy to live in the area again and look forward to sending my two kiddos there in a couple of years when they are old enough. I hope this helps!

My 2 daughters went to this school until we moved. They are bright kids who were challenged by their teachers in ways that stretched them academically, creatively, and socially. The teachers and principal here care about the students and are always ready to involve and include parents. This school can get low ratings based on test scores, but the population here (being rural) is quite varied. More than 50% of the kids are on free/reduced lunch and many are ESL kids. There are also highly-educated parents in the medical and high-tech industries, so you get a real mix. The school has dedicated PE, music, and art teachers that the students visit twice a week. There's also an excellent librarian that offers weekly enrichment on the class library visits. The school offers many free after-school programs such as sports, robotics, and knitting! The PTO is great and provides extra family programs as well as lots of money to pay for field trips, assemblies, and classroom materials. This is a GREAT school and I'm happy my kids could get such a great start in their public education here.

The teachers are average, but no one stood out to be above average, however they were so much nicer than the administrative/office staff. I dreaded calling the school due to how rude they were and always having the feeling of putting them out. The school my kids are in now has done more for them in the 2 months they have been there than this school did in a year. It's a shame Washington made Charter schools illegal... this area needs some.

This school is very personal. They know you and your child by name, and they inform you of any problems with your child, even the small problems. This school is awesome!
