Tukwila Elementary School Ratings & Reviews

My child is in 1st grade this year and I've spoken with many happy parents who have had children in all grades. The consensus has been very positive and I personally could not be happier with Tukwila Elementary. I am extremely impressed with the curriculum and the teaching style. TE does a lot with a little, having one of the most culturally diverse and challenging student populations in the nation. One in ten students are homeless in the district and those stats are worse for the elementary schools. Language barriers and cultural differences make it difficult to communicate with parents and impress the importance of being involved in their children’s homework and many of these parents have trouble understanding the homework themselves because of their difficulty with the language. This makes teaching at TE very challenging but they do an admirable job in spite of the difficulties..

These parental reviews are a joke!!! Maybe its your fault that the school programs aren't working because I am a parent, my child attends Tukwila Elementary and I volunteer at that school and my child is succeeding in school very well. I communicate with her teacher throughout the school year, even have her 1st grade teacher number still so that I am able to contact her at the end of my work day as well. Also as a volunteer I never did a fingerprinting so that part is untrue as well as working in the classroom the teachers are very organized and structured. Just because you don't follow up with your children at home as well as what they are being taught at school then of course they aren't going to progress. Tukwila Elementary is an amazing school and my child loves it there. Office staff are very friendly and the counselor there is amazing as well. I would recommend this school to any person with a young child looking to move to the Tukwila area. I have never had a problem with this school in the last 2 years my child has attended and have never heard anything bad from another parent. In fact even the other parents I've talked to have said they and their children love this school!

Tukwila teachers are a mixed bag. My daughters teachers were good to terrible. Bullying on the bus is not taken seriously. I filed a complaint to the transportation, and got nothing. The bus driver I spoke to was defensive. Absolutely not what I wanted to hear. Had to complain to principle, her teacher, and counselor before action were made and bullying was taken seriously. My son is exceeding in all test scores, unfortunately can't say that as a whole for the district. There's nothing for the students who exceeds academically. Office manager and attendance are very pleasant to work with. My son loves this school. He's safe, fed, and somewhat learns. Needs more parent involvement!! He's needs to be challenged, this school unfortunately doesn't.

"Wow! Very shocked at both one star ratings for this school. I won't sugar coat it; Tukwila as a school district has its issues. Being a small district, with ELL kids speaking over 50 languages at home means resources are stretched. I will even agree that kids that are average. above average and native language speakers can get forgotten. Efforts ARE made to challenge those kids, but parents do have to be a ""squeaky wheel"" and advocate for those kids throughout the year. What is an outright falsehood is the comments about the teachers, all excellent in the SIX years my child attended this school. Several teachers, at least one in grade, are so amazing, I would follow them and recommend them without hesitation to ANY incoming student of that grade, they are just that good. Fingerprint process has taken, at the most, two weeks, in the three times I have had to do it (has to be renewed every two years). PTA is VERY involved in the school, sponsoring events for the kids, such as dances and so forth, and my experience is that they do a lot with almost nothing because parent involvement, perhaps because of the different cultures in the district, is minimal."
