Our daughter drove the process of applying and attending SCDS. So far we have been very happy with the development opportunities she has experienced. the campus is limited but they make use of the area parks and have solid after school sports program. We are not huge money bags, but the community has been very open and welcoming. Are there considerable resources available? Oh yes....but you don't have to bankrupt yourself to participate. My daughter is in her second year at SCDS and it has been amazing to watch her dig in and participate in every sport or theater event available. She was a total outsider, but has been welcomed. To the reviewers that say priviliged upper class white..... well maybe....but you get out what you put in. My daughter works crazy hard to learn everything she can and the school is right there supporting her every step of the way. I don't know how it would be if my child had behavioral problems. I do know they are clear. If you get kicked you forfeit your entire remaining tuition. Even in a very high level private school you are still required to parent your own child and teach the the necessary life skill of focus and self control.

SCDS has provided a solid, differentiated education for my two very different kids. In our experience, most instructors are at the top of their game, the parent community is engaged, warm and inclusive, and the character-building and social-emotional programming is embedded in every grade and classroom. Sure, there are a few families at the school who can afford to provide their kids with over-the-top experiences, but there are just as many who are beneficiaries of financial aid. Some instructors are not as fabulous, but what school is perfect? The school leadership has worked extraordinarily hard on diversity and inclusion efforts in recent years. There are lots of community building events, book discussion groups, and guest speakers that extend the learning outside the classroom. Other things to know: the school does not tolerate bullying and/or physical intimidation at all. The music program in the upper grades could be improved. The 6 ski Fridays in Jan/Fed have been a cornerstone program since the school was founded and are an amazing growth opportunity for kids who are typically super academically focused. The school tends toward dual working families and draws students from all over the Seattle area. Playdates can be challenging but people make it work. People who get involved with the school in some volunteer capacity end up feeling more "in-the-know" and happier with the experience. The Queen Anne location can be challenging for some, especially when it comes to pickup at rush hour. The school has recently instituted opt-in bus services from neighborhoods where there were enough families to support the cost. Since it's not a public institution, the costs have to be borne directly by those families. Students with learning differences are accommodated but some families chose to pursue out-of-school tutoring. There's not a lot of drama in this community, while the parent body is diverse culturally, ethnically and in family composition, parents tend to be capable professionals who communicate in a positive and solution-oriented manner.

I am a student at this school. This school is super strict and won't let us have any fun. They tell us what we can do in order to do something fun (these things we have to do mainly benefit the teachers/school) and once we have done these things, they just say we didn't do it or make some other excuse. They believe in not allowing kids to go do what they actually want to do without stepping in and ruining the fun for the kids.

A great school if you are a rich white parent who doesn't mind thousands of dollars per year of your money being spent on things like flying to New York to see Hamilton, class trips to Europe and Africa, and taking every winter friday off to go skiing. If you are more interested in getting out of your elite bubble and getting a more diverse and valuable education for your kids, look elsewhere.

Definitely mixed ... we've had some great teachers and some that only think they are great. Overall, the school is overpriced for the education it delivers.
