Margaret Mead Elementary School Ratings & Reviews

My kids have been going thru Mead for 10 years, some in middle school and high school and some still at Mead. It is a great school, the older ones are exceling in higher grades, fully able to listen, follow directions and make grades that get them into National Honor Society. We have a rebuild of the building coming soon and a new STEM program. This is the place to be, we love it here and I'll be sad to outgrow Mead one of these days and not see my fellow volunteers and the amazing teachers and staff as much as I do now.

A lot of the comments/ratings here focus on the school buildings and designs. A new expanded school is coming in 2019 which addresses a lot of the concerns like the lack of a lunch room, use of portables, parking, etc. The teaching itself in the school is good as evidenced by the above average test scores of the students. Teachers are engaged and willing to spend extra time with students or parents if asked. We've gotten guidance on how to help kids understand materials they missed, approaches to motivation, etc. In all 3 years my child has been there, all the teachers provided weekly progress reports on the kids as well as weekly updates on what would be happening the following week. Mead is also the only school in the district to offer a STEM program for elementary kids.PTA is getting more active, but they struggle for volunteers. The events they hold from international night, math night, square dances, talent shows, etc are well received and we've seen several teachers and administrators there. In addition, they fund a lot of extras for the students from playground equipment to extra instructional resources.Every school can do better and here are a few things I'd like to see:1) Better support for accelerated learners. LWSD is very competitive on their formal gifted program, so a lot of kids that would be in those programs in other districts aren't allowed in at LWSD due to capacity. It would be nice if they offered a semi-accelerated option for these kids while they're part of their main classrooms. I've seen a few very bright kids being bored in their class due to the lack of challenge. This isn't a Mead issue, it's a LWSD issue.2) More welcoming front office. Nothing bad, but provides a better 1st impression.3)Better explain the love&logic approach to new parents. The process of helping kids emotionally mature as well as the approach to homework are different than most of us grew up with when we went to school in the 80s and certainly different from anything I've known from my time overseas. Understanding the process and how it develops over the years in elementary school is important so parents don't feel so concerned.Overall, I think you need to look at the results of the school. Happy kids. Above average scores. No abnormalities of academic failures from kids who come from Mead as they go into higher grades. We're glad our kids go to Mead.

The school is old and poorly designed. It is scheduled to be replaced. There is no lunch room. Kids get there lunch in an outdoor area and eat in their class room. My kids complained school ground play equipment would be removed after someone was injured. The school is over crowded. The staff seems to lack direction and motivation. The staff does not communicate well with parents. Very little interaction promoted between parents and staff other than a 15 minute parent conference 2 times a years and an initial curriculum meeting. There does not seem to be much in the way of leadership which should reflect on the principal. Most of what my kids bring home from school are work sheets. My daughters classroom has one electrical outlet in the entire class room. The PTA no longer sponsers after school functions. They now defer to the "Y" for after shool activities. There is limited parking at the school. I know of several parents that pulled their children from the school and found alternative means of educating their children. If you are locating to Sammamish, Mead should be your last choice of schools.

Daughter is in 1st grade and loves both KG and 1st grade teacher. So far so good.
