My son has been here since kindergarten and is finishing 5th grade in a few days. My daughter is in 2nd grade. All the teachers we've had so far, were all amazing. Both of my kids have the best time at school. I love the diversity. The principal and staff is outstanding. I wouldn't want my kids in any other school.

Madison is average, the principle there is very nice and charismatic but beyond that everything falls flat. On one hand I blame the district, they don't back the teachers and on the other hand I blame a questionable PTO. Bullying and bad behavior are rarely addressed with any authority not just at Madison but also in the entire district as a whole. In regards to the PTO they host events that are not age appropriate. In one instance they were showing a PG-13 movie, last time I checked all the students who go to Madison are under the age of 11. Finally the bus drivers that service Madison are rather terrible and have nearly hit my car a few times or even driven up on the sidewalk.

Madison is a gem. The school has a good balance of academics and enrichment. Madison has assemblies, field trips, author visits, specialists, after school events, talent shows, Science Fairs and 5K fundraisers. There’s lots of parent and community support and volunteering opportunities. The principal, Mr Spatolla-Knoll (or Mr DSK) has emphasized PBIS and social emotional learning in all the classrooms. The students are kind to each other and the school has a good reputation for children being respectful. (There have been one or two “old school” teachers who obviously don’t agree with the schools PBIS, but they are having to get with the program or have moved schools.) The office is friendly and helpful. It’s been said before, but the principal really is kind and caring. The kids love him because he is kind and because he is genuinely interested in them and their well being. He sees the good in all children, so he helps them make better choices, preferring to discuss problems with the students instead of just punishing them or keeping them off recess. This is a hard sell for some, but the parents and most teachers appreciate his approach to discipline. (The previous principal was heavy into suspensions and losing recess as punishment.) Mr DSKs new hires for Special Education are great and have been a support and comfort to me and to my child who has been struggling with his disability this year. The reading intervention Title program is great. A lot of work and volunteer support is given to children who might need extra help or support. The reading teacher is also a great hire. Parents should know that the school has a lot of part time staff, including the principal who has two jobs. (You wouldn’t know this because he is always visible and available.) Part time staff is not the fault of the school principal but because the ways schools are funded in Washington. Those parents who enroll their children at the shiny new alternative school instead of Madison are a part of the problem because less kids at Madison means less teachers, less counselors, and less librarians and principal time. Madison is a really good school and I have no problem recommending and encouraging parents to send their children to Madison.

Madison is a wonderful neighborhood school. It is a special school because of its small size. The Eastside community really supports the school. Many teacher, paraeducators, and the principal live in the school boundaries.

Mr. DSK is an outstanding principal who cares deeply for Madison. Our two kids' teachers have all been great and their preschool program is wonderful. Our PTO is having a fun year providing all sorts of exciting events for the families. I would recommend you come down to Madison, check it out, talk with the principal, and get a tour. We have weekly parent get togethers at the library Monday mornings 9-9:50 AM - free coffee and pastries. Come meet your neighborhood school community!
